It's because they also get orders of magnitude more in financial aid than I did and have a starting wage orders of magnitude more than I did when I graduated.

And, Bob, it's because US Gov't. interventions have increased the supply of students via guaranteed loans without constraining the colleges from raising the tuitions, colleges whose vast endowments are tax-exempt.

The knowledge to perform a specific career or trade is a benefit to the public. It increases GDP and tax revenue. The public should pay for that as an investment in itself.
