I'm going to register for the Western Wyoming Marathon.

Only two days away now....

Seems it would be so much easier to just get a good personal trainer and trim your times the hard (well easy) way.

That said, I have often gone online and before that to paper maps to shave tiny distance from my bike commutes. I got a kick out of getting as close as the bird's flight distance as possible.

I'm new to this forum and drawn here after accidentally stumbling over the excellent, hilairous and absolutely thrilling New Yorker article that has destroyed my last days at the office. I find the story so contrieved, absurd and ridiculous, not only on behalf or the originator himself but also of the actions of everyone that has taken a stake in uncovering the whole thing. The role played by internet as well in enabling the initial temptation of international fame and recognition bigger than a small town in Michigan, in facilitating the chase on this and consequtive fora as in providing the evidence in splits and pictures is astonishing.

Next I would actually like to see someone starting up a real West Wyoming Marathon in Jackson Hole. From what I've seen it is a beautiful place worthy of an event. There should even be a special price for the runner with the best negative slit! I would sign up, even if it would requirering travelling all the way from Europe.

BTW, have you found anyone trying the same with sub 4h marathons yet?

Everytime it gets a post, people go nuts checking for new news, which boosts its "hot now" score. There have been at least a half dozen posts since January, but after a recent new one, someone purged the very recent one and the relatively recent ones back to January; oddly, the poem stands.

I think for myself (and perhaps for others) this hits close to home. Before I had to give way to achilles injuries turning me from a competitive runner into a recreational biker I had two goals left to accomplish. I never ran a marathon and I wanted 1. Run one under three and 2. Win my favorite local road race one last time before I had to hang it up. Knowing I was on borrowed time, I failed to accomplish either of them. I've always been one of those runners that probably knew more about my competition's times then perhaps they themselves knew. I had a teammate in high school that ran a marathon. You figure the accomplishment of completing the marathon as an 18 year is an amazing feather in one's cap. The truth was he ran 4:15 and finished with a female alumnus of our school. Some 15 years later, I saw him in a grocery store. He asked me if i was still running and I told him I was attempting a marathon. He recounted his marathon and went into detail about his 3:15 marathon. I thought, well, it's been 15 years, perhaps his memory is a little fuzzy. Then he went into detail about his 1:15 for the first half. Okay, he couldn't run one half in 1:15, let alone a split. I lost a lot of respect for him that day. Look, there's things that we as runners would have loved to accomplish. I wanted badly to be my district's 3200 meter champion (3rd) 1500 under 4:00 (4:03) 10K under 32 (a handful of high 32's) I ran three half marathons and the last two races I ever ran were 1:18 and 1:27, the latter being Seattle finishing back to back to back 7 minute miles and getting passed like no one's business. I was a pretty decent runner. But it insults everyone with honest results to fabricate this. Moreover, what if I did accomplish a sub 3 hour marathon? Additionally, if I came on here and conned everyone that I did, I'd still have to know in my own head I most certainly did not accomplish this. I am sorry, I honestly just discovered the New Yorker article today.....I've come across many runners that have tried to pass off times they never ran....and tried it in a room full of runners....and runners are some of the most anal individuals. In some of my training runs, I recall a 7.5 miler where I probably had no less than 30 checkpoints. Did Kip actually think in a sport full of bean counters he'd snow people?

Good question. Actually, it looks like his mention got deleted (or added).

One source, with a date of April 25, 2013 has no mention.

Another, with a date of April 24, 2013, mentions Kip at the end, but weirdly cuts off mid-sentence. It also cites the above link as the original source.
