This thread went off the rails a bit with 1 particular poster hijacking it and trying to make it about one moderator so we have locked it.
Before I give my takeaways, if you have concerns about moderating, or posts, please report them or email me directly. We make it very easy to be heard at LetsRun.com and reach us. But if you sidetrack threads by discussing moderation, those posts will be removed and can lead to temporary bans as they ruin the discussion for everyone else.
But some takeaways. 1) Dealing with the problematic posters/troublemakers isn't easy but we need to make sure in dealing with them we do not go too far and harm the experience for other posters 2) The filters often flag people by accident. Exempt SC members from the filters at the very least. 3) Consider creating a toggle so people don't have to see "this post was deleted in a thread". In the posts where the trouble makers try and takeover, these notifications start to ruin the experience. 4) Consider moving some posts out of the main forum. 5) Look at limiting how often people can post in a thread. 6) Try and get a better handle on the use of VPNs by people posting, reporting posts, upvoting, etc. 7) I will actively monitor all of malmo's moderating and posts for the next week and give him feedback. We already actively communicate but some of your points and emails were helpful.
I think paid mods with shifts would work better than the current system of volunteers.
Mods, probably mostly US based, are on moderation whenever they feel like. This potentially leaves ripe windows for someone (like the man who wishes he was a Texan) to spam the board unchecked for hours. Also if a troll could out endure the mod after being deleted for some time, he could then overwhelm the board with horrific threads. By hiring some Australians and some Europeans, these windows for trolling could be shut down. A paid mod would be moderating for 40 hours a week too, not when he or she felt like it, which could be a few hours a week.
I've been waiting for the day when a troll completely disrupts coverage of a major event like ncaas, worlds, or the olympics. Without an employee dedicated to the time, there may be no one on stop the troll.
I am locking this thread. 1 person has probably posted 601-100 times in this thread and there was stuff like this that we deleted (this is false)
I am afraid of Malmo. Yesterday he posted hear that he knew who I was and that he was afraid I had firearms training. I know nothing about firearms, which must mean he knows about them.
he also knows my IP, which means he knows exactly where I live. Exactly.
im afraid what he might do. This is a man who knows where I live and just yesterday made a post saying he knows who I am and that he has a gun
I will tell you what does have something to do with it. His alzheimers and dementia. Those 2 diagnoses prevent him from all basic communication in public settings and online settings. He often doesnt even know what he's typing or how his words impact others. He has now divulged into flat out name calling. He is confused, disoriented, angry, all by all accounts inappropriate in his social interactions. Its gotten to the point where he doesnt really understand reality. He thinks everyone on here is a "bad guy" and thinks hes capable of understanding everyone's life story and being a "disciplinary grandpa" to everyone. This is not his role here.
His delusions and dementia-derived anger absolutely warrant his retirement from any type of oversight or moderation duties. Since it's gotten to the point if him not really understanding right from wrong, and totally misunderstanding what other users are typing, combined with him not personally understanding his own role here, all of that creates an extreme danger to this community. Its also creates an onslaught of legal liability issues for the site owners, who really need to rethink their own indemnity being jeopardized by malImo.
So while we have taken away some legitimate concerns about moderating from this thread, hope you guys see how there are some true troublemakers on here, who are obsessed with our moderators or at least 1 in particular.
