Tuohy did look like she was out for a jog until 4k btw
For all the talk that she would never be able to adjust to racing with actual tactics, she looks like a pro now. I had the sense that she was prepared to respond to whatever happened. She looks so comfortable out there now, even when there are lots of women right with her. She has the jets ready to go, and it is just a matter of when it seems right to go. I think she is even more enjoyable to watch race now than when she led from the gun in high school. If she is healthy in November she is going to be next to impossible to beat.

I think he said the same thing at the Notre Dame race and someone who was there said she was extremely spent at the finish.
I wasn't there, haven't seen any video... but just using my brain it seems to me BYU was specifically instructed to NOT kick at all in the last 2K and just roll into the finish. No way they finish that close together and all of them have a poor finish on the same day. Cracks me up reading that USTFCCCA.org article or others comment here and no one has come to that conclusion yet.

Tuohy looked strong at the end. She was going hard to ensure she won, but certainly not a full out sprint. Pretty much exactly at 1500 remaining, she dropped the hammer and nobody went with her. Chmiel did close the gap a bit until Tuohy noticed her, and then it was over.
Chmiel also looked really good. When Tuohy made her move, Chmiel dropped back along with Stearns and Mitchell...but then she pulled away from them and moved closer to Tuohy. It's always hard to tell how hard Chmiel was running at the end because of her running style...but she obviously had a solid race.
Good time for Mareno..I think thats close to her best 6k time.

The video NC State posted on Instagram seems to validate that she was hardly spent at the finish at ND. I think what I said at the time was she looked nowhere near as spent as she did after winning 5000 in Oregon. You might want to go reread that portion of Joe Piane thread.
In the Paul Short thread there were comments on how fast that course was. 24 ladies in the top 109 today had run at Paul Short and today they averaged 36 seconds slower, with the minimum being 24 seconds.

It was a 6K ‘sit and kick’.
For reference, Orton closed the 6K in 6:12 for the last 2K last year and Tuohy did 6:10 today. Different races, courses, etc but 12 seconds faster today than everyone but Chmiel.
With NAU not likely in the running for the title, Smith should give Nico and Drew the freedom to fight for the individual championships. This is Nico’s chance. The Stanford boys likely won’t risk anything and neither will the BYU guys. Nico can do what Mantz did last year and go for the individual title once he sees the team title out of reach.
What if they had Nico/Drew go out really hard, like Kiptoo level hard, to pull the whole field out way too fast? The rest of the NAU guys could go out more conservatively and pick up the carnage in the last 2k. Whichever one went out hard would probably lose their chance at a title, but probably be fit enough to place top 10. IIRC that's what Notre Dame did when they finished 2nd, but they had Kiptoo to pull out the field instead of having Nuguse do it.
It's a really risky strategy because if #1 misjudges their effort on a course that tough, they could crater and finish below the 40s, but tbh Nico seems like the best runner in the NCAA to do it. Without it, it doesn't look very likely for NAU to win. Stanford's #5 looks so far off 1-4 that going out fast could lose a lot of points, but even if NAU executed it perfectly BYU has a good chance of winning. BYU's 1-5 spread was 2.5s without Clinger, which is absolutely nuts.

Flotrack was wondering if anyone could even be within 15 seconds of her. HUGE performance by Chmiel to be within 5 seconds, and BACK! NCAA’s is going to be exciting!
Click the little arrow on the left of the team to see who raced for the team and their score. The right column of that expander shows the people on the roster who didn't race and how they would have scored at the meet. Tulsa seems to have Scott Beattie and Michael Power who could have helped, but they're both marked as inactive because they haven't raced yet this season..
