Free college wouldn't change that much, because people still rack up a ton of debt in grad programs, expensive private colleges, and living expenses even when their tuition is free.
Free education should get you the knowledge you need to function in society. The knowledge to perform a specific career or trade should come somewhere else and be at the buyers expense.

No
The knowledge to perform a specific career or trade is a benefit to the public. It increases GDP and tax revenue. The public should pay for that as an investment in itself.
It's because they also get orders of magnitude more in financial aid than I did and have a starting wage orders of magnitude more than I did when I graduated.
Are there really still people around that honestly think that education today is not more of a burden that it was for older generations?
So you don't understand how to account for inflation? Maybe you should have went to a different school. Your education seems to be lacking.
I graduated in '98 with $18,000 in debt and a starting salary of $35,000 a year with a degree in mechanical engineering. The average student today with a 4-year degree graduates with $32,731 in student loan debt and with the same mechanical engineering degree earns $64,501. So, while the debt is 82% higher, the starting salary is 84% higher. Cumulative price change between 1998 and 2022 is 81.76%, or right in line with both numbers. With your grammatical errors, I'm guessing you're not an English major, and with your lack of understanding of numbers, I'm guessing you're not an engineer, math or economics major, so I'll have to guess you are a biology or education major.

I’m ok with that, but also getting an undergraduate degree from a public university shouldn’t saddle you with enormous debt. I also agree that costs need to be wrangled down to a level where paying back those loans isn’t hopeless for so many.
It MIGHT increase gdp and tax revenue but there’s no proof that offsets the cost. If it did people wouldn’t need their loans forgiven…especially $300B. If it doesn’t have a return greater than the cost it’s not an investment.

And the businesses themselves. Seems they don't want to invest in their own future workers. They can't expect to get educated, work-ready employees for free.

As soon as there’s some sign this administration is addressing costs they’d get more support for this. Not from me but…

It is possible but may requires some sacrifices. Live in LA, go to USC and live at home for example. Going away to college and living in dorms/frat houses and even paying out of state tuition can really add to the total cost of college. Manage the costs and you can manage the amount you need to borrow.

I got my masters paid for by my employer. I’m OK with companies starting apprenticeship programs.

That's ridiculous.
My car enables me to get to work where my career benefits the public. Should the government pay for my car?
Funny how no one ever says “it’s unfair that kids attending college today have to pay orders of magnitude more in tuition than I did.”
It's because they also get orders of magnitude more in financial aid than I did and have a starting wage orders of magnitude more than I did when I graduated.
The average cost of tuition has increased by 144% after inflation over the past 20 years, dopey.
There's fine print. The proposal is to cancel $10000 of student loans for selected individuals. This will be like Obama-Biden Plan to rescue certain selected homeowners during 2009 recession. The goal was to actually slow down foreclosures, 2009 to 2010, to not have the foreclosures all occur within 90 days thus causing a great depression. 2009 & 2010, homeowners were encouraged to apply for this or that refinance program. While applying for this or that refinancing program, sheriff deputies eventually threw home owners out onto the street. It just spread out the pain. There is NO WAY Biden will forgive $10000 of student loans to everyone. A few million will apply for program and only a few thousand will actually get this benefit.
This. The list of qualifiers will be incredibly long. 2021 adjust gross income of $50k per individual, $80k per family, public school debt (no private), must be employed and earning at least 150% of poverty level, no prior forbearance, forgiveness or deferment, $10k goes only to pay first $10k of principal so that only new borrowers see full benefit, everyone else prorates based on payment of principal, offset by any financial aid received, never declared bankruptcy, no purchase necessary, not valid where prohibited, cannot be combined with other offers, owners and employees of KPRC in Cincinnati are not eligible, funds to be cancelled in 40 annual installments of $100 a year starting in 2026 with a balloon payment of $6,000.00 in 2066 (acceptance of cancellation funds will extend loan repayment to 2066 regardless of principal balance owned).
And scene.
But seriously, the dummy DNC corporate Dems cannot imagine doing anything that will actually improve the material conditions of their voters. They will qualify the snot out of any forgiveness program such that there will only be one bisexual South Asian illegal immigrant double amputee from Sioux Falls who will qualify.
Joe Biden took lessons from the Obama-Biden administration. They're not necessarily all the right ones but he learned from experience. One thing he learned was to go big or go home in a recession. Another thing he learned was that programs to aid individuals in a massive crisis cannot be highly qualified and voluntary. They need to be broad, sweeping, and automatic. So, for instance, direct payments to families, not only if you fill out your tax forms in such a way do you get it, and that policy dates to a Democratic House in the pandemic under Trump and was followed by Biden. Biden also learned from the failure of the previous loan cancellation program, which barely got anyone before. Just this summer they ramped up the old, smaller program and by the end of the summer they had 1.5 million people in it. Same thing with this big loan cancellation program. 43 million and you don't have to stand on your head to get it. College had become extremely unaffordable, as conservatives have rightly said, so why is it wrong to do something vast and decisive about it? Answer: because they think it would help the Democrats politically.
It's because they also get orders of magnitude more in financial aid than I did and have a starting wage orders of magnitude more than I did when I graduated.

You're right that it's unfair. And part of that is because we've subsidized demand via student loans backstopped by the federal government. So if you don't like soaring tuition costs, you shouldn't like this plan.
