There is the thing of signing the documents for taxes. Whenever I've had to miss the awards ceremony for a race that gave prize money, the RD has contacted me and I needed to fill out the paperwork before ever getting any $.

Additionally, the event also has a 4-member relay option, so there are crowd opportunities as well... although, given his history, I doubt that he'd be able to run a legitimate "relay leg" of approximately 6-1/2 miles. :-)
This statement piques my curiosity. I think there are numerous instances of people crying out for attention and fed by any kind of press they subsequently receive--be it positive or negative. I don't think there's anything about Kip's story that suggests that he fits that category: the evidence suggests that he was trying to develop a reputation as a local hero, dentist who runs marathons impressively fast for his age but is so modest about his success that others have to tout his accomplishments in the local papers. Except that it appears to have been Kip himself who wrote those letters.What I find really odd, however, is how someone could read the article and then claim they believe that Kip is revelling in the negative publicity. That strikes me as very far off base--and a little suspect.

Read the article and other parts of this thread. From accounts by RDs and Litton's own words, he would not accept awards at the ceremony itself (i.e. in front of others) but would later call the RD, identify himself and his finishing position, and ask if there was any award(s) available.

I can confirm that is what happened at VCM in 2010. Kip was 7th gun time in the M45-49 age group, would have been 1st if we were doing results by chip time. He either called or emailed a week or two after the race asking when his award would be mailed. I commnicated with him that we did awards based on gun time. That's what got him on our radar, noticing the big differential and then having him call in about awards. I thought it was odd that someone who was a good enough runner to run 2:49 wouldn't know the standard protocol for awards.
So there is suspicion that he took prize money that allegedly belonged to others.
