Why do you assume the two choices are mutually exclusive?
Laying down a sub-3 in all the states isn't the easiest thing to pull off. Trust me. I'm one of the 4 people who have actually done it. I don't want to see someone cheat their way to an accomplishment that I worked so hard at. I'm glad that I don't have to worry about getting kipped at a race anymore. Also, I really appreciate the work that Scott H, Mark S, SOKLR did to expose this guy along with the many anonymous sleuths on this thread that spent time digging through the lost & found photos, race results, and other computer nerd stuff. The article is out, and kip is done racing. I know we are all a little annoyed that kip didn't share his exact cheating methods, but life will go on. Job well done folks.
No, I didn't gloss over anything. He also ran many different distances besides the marathon, even 5k's and cheated in those as well. Leaving the state would have happened with or without the 3 hour goal in terms of cheating as eventually you get recognized in and around the local races.
My main point was about Boston. You didn't mention anything about that did ya? Point out what to you is a flaw, but you don't respond to the crux of my post. Boston can be navigated via a bike, I did it, and it was easy.

Get injured and see how far you go (do not confuse injuries with setbacks that last a week or two). I did it when I was 16 Spanky and could have done the same thing you claim to have, but....

To refresh, you say very clearly here he went out of state because, in your mind, no one would know who he was and he'd get away w/it longer. Well, no, that's not why he went out of state. As I pointed out, and is noted on pg 42 of TNY story, he hoped to run sub-3 in all 50 states, thus his trips out of state. He certainly didn't do it to avoid getting detected because he listed all his exploits on his ill-fated WorldRecordRun website and many, if not all of his races were also on athlinks - for all the world to see.
Per your take on how he cheated @ Boston - thanks for your input. The 'how' isn't so mysterious to me - the 'why' is.

No, it's not Kip. Take a look at her photos from the next year's half. In the 2009 race she just happened to get caught in some unflatering shots. In 2010 she's back with the same glasses, too, and giving it her all. You should really do a little more research before raising possibilities like this. No need to hurt anyone else's feelings.

If any donations were not passed on, that is tax fraud, most likely mail fraud and a number of other serious offenses. Has Mr. Singer looked into this?

Why "Leave it alone"? The potential theft of funds targeted for a charitable organization is more disturbing to me than his cheating in the racea. And cheating in the races is very disturbing.

But to state an angle which I'm not sure has been postulated anywhere on this thread: if there were money raised but not sent to the CF fund, he may have intended to use the money to pay medical bills for his son. And since his son has CF, in his mind, he has effectively used the money for CF. (Even though donations to the fund presumably go to research rather than treatment.) Most of us wouldn't take such a route, and it wouldn't excuse the race cheating, but just throwing this out as a possible motivation, right or wrong.

Dude, relax. I think most of avid posters to this thread realize that it is not impossible to cheat your way through Boston and the other races; Singer may have laid that on a little thick. However, the combination of the "why" and the sheer effort to do it across the country and in races like Boston, is something to be considered. Congrats on following your boyfriend around for his 2:54, but I bet you did not bike right up to him by the chip mat for 15K which is basically on a causeway between two lakes, with few fans and a huge group of photographers; did you also bike right up into Wellsley to ditch your bike by the 13.1 mat while the 1:20 guys went past, because maybe it's doable, but stupid. I have not followed this too closely myself, so I could be easily missing finer points of his methods and the known facts, but driving Boston and hitting all the timing mats is generally out of the question, unless you have a very knowledgeble driver assisting you. Biking it is very doable, but the "why" takes on a new emphasis; we're talking serious psychological issues. This is how articles on Kip Litton and James Hogue make it into The New Yorker, not because a bunch of Let's Runners have a beef.

I've biked it 3, yes, 3 times following friends, all sub 3 hours, although I am sure that you must be a tough 2:09 man, right? The last time I did it was in 2011.
They will not stop you at the 15k point and obviously you aren't smart enough to figure it out. You can walk, jog, or bike right on the shoulder any where around 2:50 pace.
Why he did it? You really aren' that bright are ya? 20 people, at least, have explained it for the brain dead. He wanted to be faster and couldn't so he did it to produce the results that he wasn't capable of. Go back and read the last 20 pages.
