The team battle really looks like it's between Boise, Rigby, and Rocky. MV, Post Falls, and Centennial look like they are fighting for 4th. Maybe CDA can sneak in there.
District V-VI's best guy wouldn't even qualify if running in District III. Now, it is safe to assume that they were conserving energy, but the level of competition is just not the same in the other districts.
Is it entirely fair? No. But it increases representation across all districts and not just District III. It wasn't that long ago that a District IV-V-VI 1:55/4:21 boy would have been left out of the state meet in both the 800 and 1600 under the current qualification rules.
That same year, eastern Idaho went 1-4 in the 800, 2, 3, 5, 6 in the 1600, and 2, 3, 5, 8 in the 3200. Regions ebb and flow, the idea is to keep representation consistent and grow the sport.
Those are their SB. Only one District 3 qualifier got a PR yesterday due to the slowness/tactility of the race. Also, a 9:39 (which is Spencer's SB) would have placed him 11th at District 3 race, still missing the state qualification at the current 5A representation standards.
District 3 has 13 5A schools. The other district races have 4 5A schools each. The other districts are awesome and have some really quality guys, however, it is really difficult to recreate the competitiveness of a race with 9 more schools.

Current representation actually falls right in line with percentage of schools per district. Increasing the representation to 24 individuals in distance races would increase the number of berths from District I-II and District IV-V-VI to 9 total athletes. District III would increase to 15. I think you probably run into the same arguments on depth going to 15 in District III as you would going 4-5 deep in the other districts. There's 0% chance that CDA is going to run Jacob King or Lachlan May at 3200m if they can only qualify 5 anyways.
Looking back at past state cross champs, it does seem like Twin Falls dropped off when Canyon Ridge opened up and then Idaho Falls dropped shortly after Thunder Ridge opened up (still takes a few years for all of your kids to filter out of your programs that should go to a different school). Those areas will continue to grow and we'll see more large classification schools in eastern Idaho.

Idaho Falls and Thunder are in different districts so Thunder didn’t affect them. Thunder opening did significantly hurt both Hillcrest and Bonneville across all sports.
If you're reading this, please pray for David Gummersall. David is the defending 4a state champ after winning it last year as a sophmore, who went down today during his anchor leg of the 4x4 with a really brutal lower leg injury that ended with paramedics taking him away in an ambulance. It's an absolute tragedy to see this happen to such a talented kid, please send your thoughts and prayers.
I know Emry Carr has been on this board before, and the CDA guys have at least looked at it...
What do we know about CDA's training? My understanding is that it is moderately high milage (60 pushing 70 during the offseason, closer to 50 in season) but I haven't seen any specifics with regards to workouts.
I'm sure its a mix of short speed work with longer tempos, but I do wonder if they are doing stuff that may burn the fire too hot too early given their performances right now.
It seems to me that they either got lucky with genetic superstars + good coaching, or they took "average" kids and are training them too much and they won't improve much over the next few years.
Average kids don’t get that fast. They been successful at getting the fast kids at their school to run track and then trained them well.
Same as every school that has a good run.
I disagree. If you overtrain someone, doing crazy workouts at a young age for several years, you can get someone to be really good as a fresh-jr, but then they either don't get better, or burnout completely.
Dev Doshi from Newbury Park is a great example, he didn't have the genetics of a Young or Sahlman, and you can see that as he's running the same times as a senior as he was as a fresh/soph.

Sorry, these times are attainable for very few people regardless of how hard they are training. Is it possible that an early maturing high school kid has reached near their ultimate potential by running 70mpw year round for a couple years? Sure, but that’s a different question.

If you think that a couple of weeks of training tells you anything about a program's stance towards sustainable long term growth, then you have huge gaps in your knowledge about training. Given that Emry has coached some of these kids for years more than a normal coach does, you would need to look at least a couple of years to get an idea.
You could also email Emry and ask him what his overarching training philosophy is. I bet if you sent a generic email and bcc'd a bunch of coaches you would at least get an idea of training from a couple. Just start with every coach that qualified an individual in District III and throw in Emry (his email is according to his North Idaho Distance website). I bet you could take 5 minutes writing the email and another 5 googling email addresses and get 80% of the coaches.
