The "timeline" of those websites is completely obvious. Kip got caught cheating in the Detroit Free Press Marathon relay, and during the inquiry process he felt the noose tightening around his neck.
He first denied the allegations that he didn't run the entire distance, and wasn't capable of the pace claimed. As part of his denial, he started to create these fake race results in hopes they would support his claim that he was capable of running the time he posted for the relay leg. He had to fake this because the time was way beyond his capabilities, and beyond any of his past race results. He offered one of these races as "proof" to the race official questioning his results and threatening a DQ.
After getting DQ'd, he changed his earlier story from "100% certain he ran the leg, and was in great shape, with a great recent marathon at altitude beating somebody who WAS capable of running the pace posted in his relay leg". The new story was "I must have made a wrong turn, and I am very sorry for the mistake which was obviously unintentional because I am an upstanding citizen and respected dentist, whose character is beyond reproach, yadda yadda yadda." The guy has obviously lied many times, and thankfully he did it enough that people were able to put 2 & 2 together.
Whether Kip Litton, DDS typed up those websites (doubtful), had a buddy do it knowingly (doubtful), or deceived Ben Millifoglie into creating them under the story that they were legitimate races (my guess), it really doesn't matter. It is obvious by the timeline that Kip had a hand in their creation, and it is obvious why Kip had them created. He was trying to squirm out of the hole he dug himself.
Sounds good, but to be credible you need to gets the facts straight. Relay was '09 and websites didn't show up until '10.

Sorry, my mistake. Obviously made an error going from memory and trying to keep the multiple years of deceit straight.
The New Mexico Marathon was the one used as a convoluted, round-about defense of unproven fitness in the Freep Relay. I misremembered it as the infamous West Wyoming Marathon.
The closing statement of Kip's "defense" email was: "One last point for those that still may be skeptical. If you are so inclined, I invite you to check in on my results periodically to see that this was an honest mistake and not just some scam."
Ironic. Fascinating he chose to use the word scam.
I think the simplest explanation for the fabricated races & websites was to build evidence to support his claimed, but unproven "fitness"... which was being questioned and revealed in 2010 as he was beginning to get DQ'd from other marathons by race directors, right around the same time the original LetsRun threads (now deleted) were picking up steam. Either, or both of these factors were probably the noose-tightening that prompted the creation of the websites.
Mr. Litton just forgot the first rule of getting out of a hole is to stop digging.
Monday is the day if all these claims of the article appearing in the June edition of the New Yorker are true. Monday's edition is the June 25th copy.
