2022 excuse for being so happy right after missing his goal by a good margin: "it's still good to PR at 37" worst excuse ever... Bekele ran his pb (2h01'41") at 37... Seth started "marathon training" 2 years ago, he's only gone backwards from Amsterdam and his views are following... He should get a coach, change his <2000kcal diet and maybe see a psychologist if he really can't sleep...
I agree, Seth is actually the better ‘runner’, not by sheer greater talent, but how he has worked hard with the talent given him. The arc of their respective careers since that ‘stunt’ of a race speedgoat is very telling.
SJD is highly talented and extremely dedicated to run the volume he does, but his races are all over the place and poorly executed and planned. Sage's "bad races" on the road are still comparable or better than Seth's best, and he is way more consistent. That's the difference between a hobbyist and a pro. Like, I can cook some pretty great meals fairly often but not as consistent as a pro chef.
Plus his videos are way better too. Typical Sage workout video:
* Dope homemade musical intro
* quick shot of coffee - "coffee is the lifeblood"
* 5min talking about planned workout during warmup jog - what it is, what it does for your fitness, how it fits into training for upcoming goal races
* 5-10min of actual workout with commentary
* a few mins of post workout reflections and how goals/training might be adjusted based on how it went
Typical Seth workout video:
* dumb clip montage of hobbyjoggers set to generic free youtube EDM
* yawny coffee shot that's the same in every video, no cool catchphrase
* 14 mins of toddler footage and seth mowing the lawn
* "today is a threshold day, 16mi threshold run (no pace/effort specified but it's slower than his MP), this is really gunna increase that vo2max and, uhhh... capillary density, I think that's right, I'm no expert but this will really get the midichlorians going"
* shot of him running away, fade, then him running back. he runs right up to the camera and puts it 2 inches from his sweaty face, lips pursed, dramatic breathing and snot smeared all over his face. "Come on now, dgr strong, butter that bread"
Yes, sadly there isn't much running content in Seth's videos. Mostly just b-roll of him trotting around Denver at 10 minute pace. ugh.
He should also get some blood work done. With all of his training, lack of sleep, minimal diet, etc., I suspect that his endocrine levels are way off and his ferritin counts are super low.
His strava shows that he did a half (1:09) a week out from the marathon. And 2xk the day before. Ha?
I am laughing at the fact that he still ran faster than Seth despite only putting in half of the training volume - 62 miles/wk. Quality is greater than quantity, it would seem.

A couple of points:
Seth is primarily a mountain runner - as Sage has pointed out in the past, Seth is an elite high altitude uphill specialist. He has won the last two Pikes Peak Marathons in times that are consistent with winners in past years. If you follow Seth at all, you know that Pike's Peak in particular and mountain running in general has special significance to him.
This is the first Marathon he has, in theory, really focused on. The others have been afterthoughts following the Summer mountain running season with no "base phase" except fitness gained during the Summer mountain running season. I think his Amsterdam 2019 (2:23 after huge blow-up and positive split) and even NYC 2019 (a 2:24 on a hard course and only two weeks after Amsterdam) are better efforts than yesterday's 2:22 after a full training block in perfect conditions.
The Amsterdam 2919 effort and his mountain improvement in 2020 and 2021 makes me think he has an OTQ in him -- which I think both SJD Stanboys and most so-called haters would agree with.

Nice thought, but I think we have enough evidence that SJD is a 2:22 guy and that's all. He's incapable, or unwilling to do the proper work to be faster on the road, and favors training that benefits his mountain running.
The reason he was able to run a 2:24 at NYC a few years back is because he was a few years younger. And the reason he's been doing so well at PP is because of a certain virus. This is a tough, tough year.

His ascent times in pikes peak are world class. If he had actual competition i think he would fair well because it seems as though he would easily hang with or lead them on the uphill and try to hang on for the downhill. Remember he has plenty of FKTs over fast guys out in CO on big mountains. I personally prefer watching those videos over his boring marathon training videos anyway.

After reading the description of Sage's videos, I'm not more like to watch his either. Seth's videos are relatively well done, but very little of his content ever interests me so I don't watch them any more except in the rare video in which he is reviewing a shoe that interests me. His lifestyle and family and philosophical observations are irrelevant to my life and I don't find them entertaining.
In this video, I examine the training, as presented on Strava, by 3 prominent YouTubers:Matt Fox @Sweat Elite - Training Sessions Nick Bester @Nick Bester Se...

NO. THEY. DON'T.
The only people who think he has an OTQ in him are stans and people who suck at math. he's literally closer to 2:28 than he is to 2:17.
18 men met the US OTQ standard at Rotterdam. 16 more people missed it, but finished ahead of Seth. Not only did he not make it, he wasn't even close. Stop buttering his knob.

The last time he ran the ascent with someone 'world class", Joseph Gray beat him by almost 4 minutes.
Last year, 8 guys nobody has ever heard of beat him on the descent. He can't hang on to anyone on the downhill.
"He would have been a star if he had any competition or he didn't have to go to the bathroom or it wasn't too hot or if he had put the butter on the right side of his cupcake or blah blah blah: the SJD Story."

Yeah, like he needs permission from you to be happy. Get the hell out of here with that. He is probably happier and faster than you will ever be.

While acknowledging that the top Europeans did not compete, Seth's Pikes Peak wins in 2020 and 2021 were the 5th and 6th fastest winning times in the last 25 years. Look it up.
He really needs to have a go at some European races. Like we get it, Seth is great on the Pikes Peak ascent. But there is a whole series of <50k trail races in Europe that the best runners in the world enter (Stian, Davide Mangini, Kilian, etc.) They will go to Pikes Peak and race it without doing months of specific training just for it. He needs to do the same on their turf if he wants to prove he can hang with the big boys of trail.
Before he got sick, Sage put together a top 10 Golden Trail series if I recall (despite a bad finale in Nepal), including a second to Kilian at PP. Could our little guy here do that..?
Doubtful. Our Little Buddy will fly to Amsterdam because there's no competition for him in the US, but won't fly to Europe to run mountains because he wins PP.

I dislike Seth very much (like I wish for bad things to happen to him) but even I will acknowledge he's top notch at ascending. He's tiny, has strong legs, and great stamina. You are correct that he's not as fast on the downhill though. Also yes, Joe Gray is superior to Seth. He was out of shape when he ran the half at Pike's Peak last time around though.

Give the guy some credit.
Sure. He's very good at running up one specific mountain.

He went to the World Championship in 2019 and finished 31st, and none of those guys were in his race. There's no reason to think he'd beat any of them on their turf.
