JENNA MF HUTCHINS - Runs 15:58 - 1st US HS Girl To Break 16:00 in XC!!

I predict Jenna runs 15:53 in her track 5k. Which would be awesome for her right now.

A little over 40 seconds, but, that’s misleading too as her PR was from a grass xc course at high altitude as well, like 5,400’. And she won that race easily, pretty much solo the entire time. Fwiw.

Exactly! Which is why they got pretty much identical speed ratings! Which means this was a really strong performance probably around 20th best all time. maybe even a little better maybe like 15 best all time but it's nothing off the charts or Epic! I mean it's nice to celebrate everyone and all that but it's also cool to live in the real world. You don't tell every kid that the greatest because it's just unrealistic and set them up for failure. Hutchins is up there with the best but keep it real and hopefully she'll stay level-headed not overdo things and have a chance to move up the ranks and be an all timer

I think FL was 2 points faster. But the bigger problem is there is not really enough data to go on with a brand new course. SRs work terrifically the more data points can be inputed about the competitors and the course. The debates happen on the margins when the data becomes more sparse. At this very early point the John Hunt Turkey Trot deluxe seems like a outlier.

What is wrong with you? A young 16/17 year old girl sets a national record and instead of celebrating it, you laugh it at. This site is really getting bad.

Nope. The course is still too easy. The second place runner in the race finished over a minute slower at AAU a couple of weeks later.

The 5K track record is nice. Well done. But Tuohy set hers in her sophomore year on an crowded indoor track without a pacer. And then never ran it again. The xc record she set was in the fall of her junior year before she was injured. And I view the 16:06 as a better performance on a tougher course. 16 does not get broken on that course.

Anyway who knows what would have happened if at that point she decides to go record hunting, drops everything, finds a nice roomy outdoor track to run on and has a pacer lead her out for 7-8 laps. Or if she wasnt injured. But that is a what if and a trivial one. The 5k record falls every few years. And the Huntsville course is still too easy.

Did you happen to notice that Wachtel dropped 21 seconds from his Runninglane time running 14:15? 77 boys ran 15:21 or faster at Runninglane. You thought 32 was a bunch under 15 minutes. Put those guys on a track and your head would spin.

astro, I use to debate if you were a coach or a college runner/young adult, but you have to be a HS kid. For one, no adult would let the actions of a 16 year old girl ruin their day. And the excuse after excuse you give above shows you're not an athlete or a coach because no athlete or coach should have a mindset like that. It's weak, shows extreme insecurity and displays your closed mindset.

Look, I'm more of a Tuohy fan over Hutchins because Tuohy was much more of a team player. However, it's cool to see new runners break out and raise the bar. If someday you end up on Jeopardy and the question is either "who has been the only American HS girl under 16:00 in XC" or "who holds the HS Girls US record for 5000m" there's only one answer, with no room for excuses. But I understand that you are in the first stage of grief right now, and will let most of it slide.

astro goes home DEVASTATED like a fool that doesn't know the sport and hasn't competed a day in his life. He was wrong on EVERY SINGLE POST. I am so glad Hutchins proved him WRONG.

With a final lap of 58 seconds, no less!

Facts are just facts. The differences in the settings were patent. One was a very roomy outdoor track, one was not. One had a pacer, one did not. Etc. And after that one race her sophomore year Tuohy never ran the distance again on a track. That is again just a fact.

But it is a record and perfectly legitimate. Whose day is bothered? It is something to debate/discuss. Better than politics. All high school records get broken. As long as it is done legitimately which this was, so be it.
