He isn't committing only to NAU; he is committing to become a professional. I wish him luck!

Who cares where he gets his degree. His parents are loaded. He'll be given a six figure job if running doesn't work out.

Hopefully, the tale of Withrow redshirting because of a stacked Wisconsin team and then making the US Senior XC team that year is something coaches have learned from. Jerry missed out on the NCAA championship bonus contract clause because of it and Matt was injured for most of the rest of his career. Bring home the hardware while you can Nico and Mike, the futures not ours to see que sera sera.

You could argue a degree itself is worthless these days depending on the field you're entering.

He could still get his undergrad at NAU and grad degree at another college. Problem solved.

On the comparison to Ritz. I can see it, particularly his style of racing (front running). If you watched Ritz in Footlocker and Nico at NXN and Clovis Invitational you'd see the resemblance.

To reply to the xyz poster: While Nico is CRZY talented AND training at very solid/high level, there is NO way that he has the fitness or strength to run top 10 let alone top 5 right now. Next year as a frosh, after another year of maturity, if he ran top 20 it would be huge! I do think that NAU is a good fit for him because as was pointed out the squad is pretty young and they will have a solid group moving forward for several years. The coach is also not one to overly milk the athletes of all potential while they are in college - leaving them with something to develop after NAU.

Doing very well with my NAU degree 2 years after graduating so my obviously biased take is that he'll be fine. Flagstaff is a special place and I never blame kids for getting sold on it even if the academics aren't the best. Nico on that team should be special and I'm excited to see what my alma mater can continue to do.

It is disgusting when peopke even point out race in something that is purely objective. You are so brainwashed from being told that it exists in areas that are subjective. You mixed up Chapa and Salazar. Chapa was the one who finished 9th and Salazar had a DNF due to a side stitch.
