Unrelated, but nothing weirder than some people's obsession with Kevin Sullivan.

UW better not ruin this kid, he should be at the Olympics next year.

Tanner will be fine, he only runs about 50km a week and is pretty much in easy mode the whole time during training. Plenty of scope for improvement.
Not with Craig Kirkwood as his coach, it'll be way harder than that. He's old school marathon.

Sydney Maree and Michael Cherono were both faster than Tanner before going to college.

Did you want access to his Training Peaks account so you can see how much he does? If not, I can assure he's only doing 50-60km a week.
I would love some more details of his training to this point!
Never knew this about Filbert Bayi.
At age 29 he started at Oklahoma. He wanted to go to a university but wasn't able to leave the Air Force until then. Then the following year the Tanzanian government urged him to transfer to UTEP so all the best Tanzanians could "train in one place" because they were disappointed by their performance at the 1983 World Championships. He barely competed in the NCAA but he ran some road races including a 2:16 marathon (Honolulu).

Marc Olesen ran 3:59 in high school in Canada in 1983. Struggled with injuries at Stanford, but got 4th in NCAA cross and ran 3:40.82 to break Olympian Jeff Atkinson's school record.

But he doesn't turn on his GPS it won't log his miles?
Kip Cheruiyot was the world under 20 record holder for 1500m when he went to Mount Saint Mary’s University in the US along with Peter Rono. They both continued at Mount Saint Mary’s the year after Rono won the Olympic 1500m in 1988, going first and second at the 1989 NCAA 1500m Rono the Olympic champ in 2nd. Joe Falcon fell in that race.
This article states that Kip Cheruiyot and Peter Rono were both sophomores in the 1989 NCAA 1500m.
Revealing that Cheruiyot’s 3:33.0 world junior record from 1986 in Grosetto, Italy makes him the second fastest NCAA 1500m recruit.
Also, revealing that Peter Rono won the 1988 Olympic 1500m as a freshman???
Nate Brannen was also sub 4 if I remember correctly
Rono, reigning Olympic 1500m in ncaa 1500m 1989. Joe Falcon down!
What did Abdi Bile run as a 1500m recruit for SMU? He ran a 3:31 while still at SMU.

George Mason, not SMU.

When Abdi entered George Mason he was a young unproven runner with a pb around 3:40. He won the World Champs 1500m in his senior year at uni in 1987.
A few interesting facts about that year was that he was injured from December till March and with about 3 weeks of running ran 1:48 for 800m. He spent much of the time injured in the pool as Cook had him running in water which was new in the late 80's. There was a good crew at Mason that year including Stephan Franke who went on to run 27:04 for 10k and the assistant coach then was Jama Aden.

It must really suck to be you then...
Winning should account for 75% of why someone is talked about. Fast times are a dime a dozen. I didnt run "fast times" but I dare you to find another 5k gold medal here in the US
Bernard Lagat USA world 5000m champion.
That’s a USA 5000m gold medal.
