So the dude beat the first place woman by a second or two. Not his fault they squeezed him into a narrow chute and put the tape in front of him. Though I understand the woman being upset in the moment at having someone in front of her breaking the tape. We've all dreamed of that moment, even if it's in a small marathon. I'm sure both the H man and the female winner are having a good laugh at it now.

Wholeheartedly agree. Given the information presented, this is the best response to this whole mess.

The guy can't be expected to jeopardize his own finish/result. What is he supposed to do? Stop and let her finish? Finish on the half-marathon line and risk not being recorded? And I can only imagine her perspective... some random dude stealing her glory, and it probably looks purposeful at the time. I'm not sure if I'd have the restraint to not yell some expletive. But it is nobody's fault but the race management.

I assume this is trolling but if not it's just stupid, some men aren't as fast as some women. Yes men have a higher ceiling and the average man is faster than the average woman but there is a range across both sexes, some women can run 15 mins for 5k, some men can't break 20 mins. To suggest they shouldn't race the other people in the race if they are of a similar ability because they are different sexes is just wilfully ignorant. Their natural talent level is just a lower % for their sex than yours is, but it's just so happened you've landed at roughly the same time for 5k

Race is to blame. Guy was probably pushing it in to break 2:53. Who knows the finish might be his Pr and wanted to get every second he could get.

Silly to think he should not push it in to get the best time he could and should slow down to let the woman finish ahead of him.

The race should have had a race official direct him to the half finish area or the woman to the half finish area.

That was pretty funny.

But it makes you think, maybe they should put up a tape for every finisher to break.

That guy is a dcik as it was obvious as hell she was lead female and he would have seen that.

Am I allowed to pass the 13 year old that starts like a bat out of hell and fades 1200m in? Just run your own damn race and stop caring about what other people are doing.

As a woman, if you are near me at the end of a race - PLEASE kick. DO whatever you can to beat me and to run your best race - I'll only run better because of it. I HATE it when guys "let me win." (or alternately, when I outkick them and then they claim they let me win)

Breaking tape is fun but jeesh. It really doesn't sound like the guy intended to, and any fault should lie with the race for the set up, not with someone who was simply trying to run his best.

Women believe that they are equal to men until they aren't and then they complain about it. If a man earns more than a woman, it has to be because of favoritism but when there is objective criteria such as in running, men can't put in their best effort?

The volunteers holding the tape should have known better. The guy looks like he also ran the full marathon, not some half marathon waddler, and it looks like they directed all the full marathon runners to that side of the cones. So he might have been confused why there was a tape but he wasn't going to cross the cones to finish in the HM line and he didn't really have time to get out of the way of the tape. But the volunteers should have known they were holding the tape for the first female runner and they appear clueless of that fact as they made no effort to signal them in the right direction.

What a tragedy. How can the volunteers go on with their lives knowing that that've made such a grave and costly mistake.

I don't really understand why breaking the tape is important. Most races don't even have a finish line tape. I've won lots of track and road races, and have never broken a finish line tape myself. Never once did the absence of a tape for me to break bother me.

Some people want to feel special. For some it's breaking the tape. For others, like you, it's a sneaky little humble brag (or more likely a fabrication).

I would expect nothing less from a Harvard man. I would expect more Midwestern grace from a tOSU woman, however.

He is wearing a yellow bib, meaning he is a first time marathoner. Obviously kicks past the girl but realizes what he did and apologizes. Doesn't seem to be intentional, but how do you not see the tape and know it's not for you?
