What's a facialist? Are you Peter North?
Ha, I see what you did there.
Who cares, Shalane is a babe

Me after a bite of magic fish.
I don't expect a woman whose hair is tied back to the point of stretching her scalp and is grimacing for 26.2 miles to seem "conventionally attractive." Shalane, "at rest," is a very beautiful woman. I realize tastes on this board run to women who are under 23 and look a half-dozen years younger than they are.

The receding hairline of many runners could be due to traction alopecia as well; years of wearing very tight/high ponytails will cause breakage and damage at the roots. It's a good idea to wear a looser ponytail, bun, braid etc. I'm sure you see the same thing in gymnasts, artistic swimmers, dancers, etc.
THIS^ I was about to say it.
It's not so flattering for women, particularly as they age, to have as low a fat percentage as they do. Guys look the same, but they don't face the same beauty standards.
First, I think they both look great, and not old for their age.
That being said, I do agree that they'd both look even younger if they didn't have years of high mileage and lots of sunshine. It just takes something from you.
It's a sexist observation: any man on LR would gladly trade a few years aging on their faces for a fraction of Shalane's or Deena's accomplishments.
My only beef is that on IG, Shalane looks pretty good. And then, in person, she looks like Skeletor and looks to be close to 45 yrs old. Same with Deena.. on social she looks great, great skin, etc., and then at TRE I swear she was 60.
She looks normal wrote:
Shalane doesn't even look old for her age. She's 37. Have you seen people at 37, they look like Shalane (normal)
Probably you think this because Americans just aren't used to seeing someone who is an adult, but not overweight. Adults who are not overweight, grew up before the obesity epidemic. So now anyone who is an adult and not overweight, to Americans, looks "old". Because people who are skinny and adults are like 60 or 70 now in America. There are no skinny 35-40-year-olds. In America, people that age have big round faces
This probably isn't just an America thing, I'm sorry for making it all about America. There's fat people in Canada too (a lot). There's probably fat people in Europe (I don't know, I have never been there), and possibly in Asia and Mexico (I have not been there either).
But bottom line, Shalane looks normal, I like Shalane, and ya'll are butt-heads!
If you had ever seen Shalane up close and in person you wouldn't say that. She has an incredibly wrinkled face for someone that hasn't hit 40 yet. This is what happens when you are fair skinned and constantly running for nearly your whole life, your skin doesn't age well because of all of the sunlight. She spends a good amount of time at altitude and that further dries up your skin.

I'm 51 and from CO mountains.
A lot of very hot, fit girls/women arrive here and bring whatever sport they do with them and then go off the rails outdoor fitness freaks. Guys too.
Without fail, if they stay 10 years or longer (lifers) they all end up looking like Clint Eastwood/Keith Richardsin the face.
Sun-fried, crows feet, tight wrinkles in leather look.
Fit as phuck, tight asses, and no fat.
....But never as pretty as when they got here.
Excessive fitness and sun destroy skin cells.
Shalene looks older than me.

Just wait until Hasay is 40. Yikes.
Could stress have something to do with it? Desi has a receding hairline. Shalane looks 50. Deena looks 60.
Amy and Kara both still look good.
Many Shalane/Deena photos are after a run, post marathon photos add at least 10 years, not 10 pounds.
Kara has relatively large amounts of melanin for a Caucasian, so she will age better.
As you know, black don't crack, in fact every color don't crack except white.
They look shameful.............................................. wrote:
They look shameful. I mean have they totally given up? Oh wait, they aren't 20 years old anymore and have been rockstars. So get the F over it. Ask them if you want to know and I'm sure they'll say they prefer the life they have.
So emotional over a simple question and observation.
Answer: to much sun for white breads. Why don’t they wear hats more often? It’s not just physical appearances that can be damaged.

My face is young looking , but my body is like a 70 year old man. Really dry skin , and wrinkled skin on my back.

This has proven true for old baby boomer hippies like me. Still sporting the pony tail but most of the rest is long gone. But I'm not shaving my head.
Age gracefully wrote:
I am a huge fan of both Deena and Shalane but our HS team had a debate about it.
Basically here is the argument.
Would you be willing to have their careers if it meant you had to look like they do at their age?
Is it from age, mileage, sun, or diet? Or maybe a combination of all?
Troll-o-meter: 9/10
So someone who visits letsrun would seriously question if they would trade the career of the most decorated runners in US history for a couple wrinkles around the eyes?
A good female writer for Running Times wrote about how competitive marathoning doesn't necessarily coincide with aging perfectly.
Shalane and Deena are attractive and have resumes that any male or female runner should admire.
Forest Gump again wrote:
Nothing unusual. A lot of high performing athletes look like that at the end of their career.
High performance training year after year can accelerate the aging process.
How about the male Taliban beard craze? Talk about ugly and aging. They look like old crazy miners from the California Gold Rush era.
