We at Divison III distance powerhouse North Central College (Illinois) cannot stress enough that Jakob mustn't overlook the chance to win a prestigious NCAA Div III title, so COME ON DOWN for a visit, Jakob! We have tornadoes (a.k.a. "tail winds"...if timed correctly), not just long winters and trying autumns and springs characterized by snow and bitter cold!
Remember, you're from cold country, too, so you know a thing or two about shrinkage from winter's bite. You'd fit in perfectly.
And there are lotsa Scandanavians in Naperville, Illinois.
So...PLEEEZE! come to NCC.
He has been a sponsored Nike athlete for some time. I heard before he was a teenager. Therefore, he is ineligible to compete in the NCAA. Thus no college coach will be recruiting him.

Thank you for this... well worded, aweome, and made me laugh pretty hard! :)

I know nothing about Jakob's backers, and so I am not calling your bluff, but can you point out any reference (like an internet link) to any news item discussing his Nike sponsorship?
Can we talk about the crumbling wall that's been covering up E. African drug use for 30 years? The barriers that have allowed athletes to use drugs off season without fear of being caught unlike most of their competitors around the world?

He's raced in Nike pro kits for quite some time, and his father is quoted in this article as saying he's signed with Nike through 2024.
(rough translation ahead)
"Jakob has got a very good deal until 2024. It ensures the economy in his commitment for many years to come," says Gjert Ingebrigtsen.

What are you talking about? Anyone capable of running sub 4 can go to essentially any school the want.
He's already a professional with a contract, no he's not going to get recruited by colleges. You think Drew Hunter is getting looked at by colleges still?

and anyone with a keyboard can use the internet....
my friend in high school was a 4:11 miler (in HS) - I remember EVERYDAY in the locker room he'd receive sacks full of mail of colleges trying to recruit him - most of them he threw in the trash - he finally went to Oregon and was Salazar's teamate - point being if a 4:11 miler got that many offers, I just can't imagine how many offers a 3:52 HS miler would get - my friend PB'd in the mile while at Oregon in 3:56 - Jakob is 4 seconds faster and still in HS - I'd say he'll get 5000 offers- that's my guess based on what I witnessed a state 2 mile champion experience - now will Jakob take any offers? the answer is NO he won't- next question
I agree with this!!!
But on a past note, Kenyan's DO benefit from EPO (Kiprop and many many others)

Lots of schools will think they have a chance of getting the good runners (like your 4:11 friend), but those around 4:00 or quicker will likely only be considering a few top schools. The recruiting may get more intense for better runners, but there are probably fewer schools involved.
I understand Jacob will probably not want to go to college in the USA, but he may consider applying to Tufts as a safety school.

It's very difficult to become a top champion if you are with a scholarship in the College, because you can't do technical choices directly connected with a strategy for growing, but you have the MUST to compete in every competition interesting your college, and can't develop any strategy looking at the future.
Athletes at that level already trains twice per day, dedicating 4-5 hours every day to their training, with the goal to build up all the qualities that are important in order to become top runners of international level. A SERIOUS frequentation in a school can disturb the project, and for that reason the best solution is to continue the education in private way.
I just don't agree with the first paragraph above
1) There are only 5 meets the school makes your run.
Your conference championship at the end of February and the NCAA indoor championships in March.
Then the conference championship outdoors in early May and then regional and NCAA championships in late May/early June.
Well I guess you can't guarantee you'll get an NCAA qualifier in a distance event at conference so maybe add two meets to that.
Galen Rupp developed pretty damn well in the NCAA system. But I actually think it's a much more important system for Kenyan runners to aspire to with Paul Chelimo being the posterboy.
If you are a Kenyan, after juniors, you pretty much have nothing to do unless you are one of the top 10 guys in the world. So a ton of Kenyans show early talent and then burn out trying to breakthrough on the world seen.
People like Paul Chelimo were able to develop into one of the World's best. Same thing with emmanuel Korir, Michael Saruni, etc.
All of that being said, it makes no sense for someone like Jakob to run NCAA. Zero.
Does anyone know if he's in high school or what his school situation is?
with the exception some great programs, College track and field is kind of a joke. For starters they get an "F" for marketing - they can't market their way out of a wet paper bag - I've been to many a college track meets and the vast majority of the "fans" in the stands are the athletes themselves with their mom and dad and brothers and sisters- I think it's nice to see family support, but a great project for a marketing major would be to double the fan base of their college track and field team/s before they graduate. Basically nobody in the community really cares about college track (unless you reside in Eugene, Oregon) So I'm telling you if Jakob were to run in college in the states, there's only one college that would make sense for him period end of story and that's the college with the Duck mascot. I could see him possibly benefiting from being a Duck for 4 years, but on the other hand I could see him benefiting even more in turning pro like yesterday!! There really is nothing for Jakob to gain by attending College in the USA - he can go to college in his own country whenever he wants (if he wants to) - but despite nothing to really gain for Jakob, he probably will still get many offers from colleges in the States, but we shall see soon enough!
can you explain what "Tufts" stands for - I liked and appreciated your response, but just not familiar with that word/phrase whatever it is- thanks
Google it!
He's going to run for PROvidence College. New NCAA rules allow professionals into their ranks.
American men regularly now run sub 13 5k and sun 27 10k but marathons stuck at 2:07. What gives?
