I actually agree that I feel bad for them. But I also feel bad for all elites that have a domineering dad/coach (same with Rupp) but they're often the ones who get to the highest level in their sport like a tiger, Serena even people like Granville and Marinovich. So that said, I also
Envy them.
It's sad that they have that life but it's also part of what makes them uber elite.
I'm sure Michael Jordan and Tom Brady aren't fun and normal people.
That said, I fully enjoyed it.
Rupp's father isn't domineering.
Let's get the facts straight, take into account every public record.
1. Rupp started so young, was already in sport, and seems to truly enjoy running. --That's a huge differentiator. There are actually runners who race so tight, emotionally, that it is hard to believe they actually enjoy running. --Rupp in fact is on record in an interview stating that it's easier for him, cos he really loves to run.
2. Rupp met Salazar so young, that he's grown up with him, and now has a bit of Salazar's direct*, sceptical and independent personality. Remember when Rupp nixed the Bekele's coming to train with NOP? (*Yet he's clearly not a blunt Bostonite from a fiery Cuban family.)
3. If Rupp didn't understand his coach, he'd have retired by now. How many of us can imagine still running at that age, and not being sick of our high school coach and needing a change?
