Brilliant post by the OP. I think Farah was hurt by the 10k. And it reminds me of why it's not fair to compare to Mo to Geb. Geb didn't do the double often as they had heats of the 10k. It's just a lot of running and he wanted to be fresh to chase WRs.
If you are worn out by the 10ks, it's a lot harder to come back and win the 5k. And if you are 34.

What years were there heats in the 10k? Didn't they stop that in the 80s?

Thank you. Especially in a numbers game where there are several studs gunning for you and you might not have 100 pct. zip in your legs due to being 34 and having run close to a pb in the 10000m. Mo finally was human on the last lap.
Mo is still superman. He was barely beaten and closed in 53. It took a 52 point to beat Mo by a small margin.

No one is getting double gold in these championships. Usain Bolt did not, Mo Farah did not and Almaz Ayana will not. Ayana's is a crazy one because she did not need to run that fast to win the gold. She probably thought she could rebreak her world record. We will wait and see what happens tomorrow.
Lamaze needed to run hard because if she did not she would let the kickers catch her. They had no option but to try to stay as close to her as possible. She will win the 5k easily.
