No. Centro doesn't even hold the American record, much less have a shot at the world record. Even if he were physically capable of it, he's admitted he's not great in time trial races, even joking that he always finishes 10th or 11th at Monaco. Centro's great at tactics and championship-style racing -- that's his strength. Racing for time isn't.
The thing about time trialing is it's mostly about running, not racing, and the guys with the most physical talent do the best at that. Centro's tactical and positional brilliance count for nothing in that situation. Centro is obviously talented but not as much as say, Kiprop or Mahkloufi or a couple of other Kenyans. He and Willis are very comparable -- both racer-types who don't do particularly well at time trials.

That race was a joke. It actually looked like the other men wanted Centro to win, reinforcing the whispers of a payoff to the other competitors. Even the '76 Montreal 1500 didn't lolly gag as slow in the early going. When has Kiprop ever run like that in a big meet other than when he was injured in London?

That's a joke right? Kiprop runs like that all the time. He is entirely hit or miss.

Centro rises to the occasion in big meets. Ryun, clearly physically more talented a middle distance runner than
Centro, crumbled emotionally when it counted most. Tactics and big race temperament are a huge factor in the 1500m. Ignoring them is ignorance of the nature of the event. Take Kiprop as a modern example. He's the most talented middle distance runner of this era. However, he's often beaten because he runs best in less important events and can't get his tactics right in the big races.
