Here is my submission to NBC. I am sure some of you without children will flame me for this. I don't care :-)
To Whom it May Concern,
I learned the word "damn" from a playground bully.
Tonight, my 7 year old son learned the word "damn" while watching the Olympic Trials on NBC. Specifically, the song playing during the promo for women's gymnastics used the word very clearly. I understand that not everyone is offended by that type of language, and that as swear words go, "damn" is fairly vanilla. However, the Olympics should be a program that our family should be able to view without the need to preview language.
To clarify: I would understand if, during a live broadcast, an upset athlete uttered an expletive (which I assume could be bleeped out, anyway). If a word did slip through in a moment of frustration, I could use it as a teachable moment with my son about the need to control emotion. This, however, is a different story. NBC had DAYS to prepare this promo piece, and there is plenty of motivational / inspirational music to choose from that is expletive-free. What can my son learn from that?
Please acknowledge receipt of this comment, and attach NBC's official stance on the matter.
Thanks so much for your time.
All the best,
Jeff
