Disrespectful coverage of 10,000m during Track and Field
I am passionate about Track and Field, both as a fan and participant. I appreciate the care NBC takes to create an engaging broadcast for a mainstream audience for what is a minor sport in the US.
The last two days however, your broadcast has showed a disrespect to the sport. The broadcast has treated the event and its competitors as an intermission in the meet. During the men's event, cuts to men's swimming, men's shotput, and then interviews of the shotput missed the key moments of the race. Coverage of the women's faced fewer interruptions, but the feature on the decathlon still interrupted the early laps (as shown in the men's race, these early laps can be as decisive as the final laps) Footage of the women's discus and Decathlon in the later laps missed the key monument the field narrowed from four contenders to the three qualifiers.
Those interrupting features and interviews are valuable to the coverage, but can easily be shown before or after completion of the event. Picture-and-picture is another solution, but your broadcast has chosen only to use it to pair a shot putter's family during the athlete's throw. Instead, the 10,000m race became the backdrop for these pieces, treating the athletes racing for Rio as stagehands, transitioning from one feature to the next.
When the coverage of any race is this incomplete, I find it easier to follow the race through updates on twitter or online. With poor analysis and mundane commentary, the only reason I tune in is the live footage. I hope to see the NBCSN coverage show more pride in their broadcast, and more respect for the event and athletes.
There are other complaints worth making, but I wrote about this. My goal is not to spam, but to make it clear that the fans are demanding better.
