Not as a backup. He is seeing if he can pull a Viren, although as impressive since Viren finished 5th in the '76 games marathon only 18 hours after winning the 5k.

It occurs to me that if Rupp were not running the trials, there would be no reason for Salazar to be there. But now Salazar will, of course, be in LA. Kara Goucher will also be there, and my guess is Magness as well. Oh my.

A bit early for weather predictions 17 days out. It could be warm, bit could be cold (for SoCal), it could pour rain. We will have a better idea 5 to 7 days out.
People do sit on each other in marathons. I do agree with your faster race point. Letting this turn into a sit and kick race could likely hand it to Rupp, assuming he runs up to his potential. Since no one is likely to Ryan Hall it. Iit will likely be slow through the half unless someone sacrifices their race to force a fast pace.

Yep. Cannot forecast with any confidence this far out. The 8 to 14 day outlook does show a good chance of above average temps, but that doesn't reach to race day; those forecasts often change considerably; and even when they're correct, there can be considerable individual-day variability.

Rupp solo'd a 1:02. A distance he's basically only raced a couple times. No one else in the USA can do that. The trials will probably be run around 2:09-10He'll be just fine. Will probably do 1200m repeats after the race, haha.

more like 2:11sub 2:10 for an American is very very rare - i doubt it's going to happen in this race. Although some new american citizens may decide to go out in 64:xx. Rupp should just run with the pack until 20 minutes to go and then see what happens - if they are on 2:11 pace the pack will be only around 3-4 people at most at 22 miles, then he decides if he wants to win or just make the team. teh problem is if there are 2-3 people out there at 2:09 pace at halfway...does Rupp go chase them or be patient?

It's a ploy. DNS or DNF for sure.
Nope - best team to Rio is: Rupp, Ritz, Estrada
Sorry - love Meb, but think all of these 3 have greater probability of earning a medal in Rio. Galen and Diego is all based on marathon potential at this point - but we're talking some serious potential in both cases (remember Diego 1/2 marathon qualifying time is quicker than Galen's).
Anyhow - hope it is a good race - and still would be happy for Meb or Luke, or any others that make the team.

Yes I'm a little worried about how the marathon will impact Rupp's training. Normally this time of year he's running 1200 repeats after his big races on an indoor track which the meet directors let him access to after the meet is over. Will the Mayor of LA let Salazar shut down the streets of LA after the race is over? Or how will his body respond if he has to do them on an outdoor track? ;)
