DW, i looked in you and, um, that doesn't sound right but, um, it means: metabolism of complex molecules into simple molecules.
neuro...i don't know which one of you that's posted on this thread you want to be. cata sounds SERIOUS. are you?

damn i'm 6'1 155 i need to stop eating
it means that his body burns muscle for energy instead of carbs. But dude if your body didn't burn your carbs you would be FAT. Unused carbs are what make people fat. Not eating fat. America has been on the "low fat" diet since the 80's, but there still fat! A no carb, high protien diet is what the average fat lazy american needs. As for us runners, we need all the food we can get!
hahahahahahaha. Im 5'9'' 155. Muscle.
Any nutrition expert would tell you that a high protein low carb diet is bogus. Your body doesn't run on protein. It runs on carbs and fat...end of story. What is making America fat is excess CALORIES. I don't care if it's from protein, carbs, fat, or feces, excess calories will make you fat. Simple. Adkins is a fool, a god damn fool. Anyone who follows that diet is in for A LOT of problems. How hard is this: 60% carb, 10-30% fat, remaining % protein, exercise, total calories around 2000, more if very active. Keep energy output/input equal and you won't gain weight..period.
Alan
Exactly, adkins this, no carb that, etc.,etc. Just get off your fat butts, work up to a 100 miles per week and eat as much and whatever the heck you want!
i agree, but he ment that for the average american the adkins diet is good. I know alot of people who have lots loads of weight with the Adkins Diet. If your body isn't getting carbs then it wont get fat. Simple. I agree that people are lazy, and that as runners we can eat whatever we want. You all should have seen Adkins on Larry King Live.
6'1", 106 lbs.-- thank you, adkins...
I believe that a major component of 'low carb' eating is appetite suppression. Normally, those on the Adkins diet eat foods that are more filling and do not trigger hunger cravings soon after eating. The result is, of course, a lower calorie intake in most cases. Additionally, as noted above, a good deal of water is lost from the body when eating this way.
It has not been proved that this way of eating is unhealthy.
Naturally, it simply comes down to input vs. output. Choose what works best for your lifestyle.

alan, you can talk a lot about weight, but you are still a fat ass yourself!
alan is too fat to be talking about weight
I'm 6'1", 162. This is no lifting, just situps and pushups 2-3 a week. In college, lifting 2-3 times a week, i got up to 173, but i am running rather well now so i don't want to get back into lifting for fear that the bulk was just hindering my running. I am a miler....i might get into doing cleans in the weightroom, but that's about it.
How many of you guys lift?
god damn
i'm 6'0 155 and this thread makes me feel fatter than oprah.
if you're 137 i'd say you're probably lean and if you're training is good then you should be ready to kick ass. if you're concerned about your health you should be seeing a doctor rather than seeking medical advice from the nitwits who swarm this board.
now if you'll excuse me i'm gonna purge.
The Adkins diet is bad for everyone. The only reason ppl lose wt is because is nothing more than a low calorie diet. I could eat twinkies all day but if I only get 2000 cals and expend 3000 cals then I'll lose wt. The brain and nervous system has only ONE energy source, and that is simply sugars.
You take it Fat, Carbs, and Protein. Protein is used to rebuild tissues. Carbs is stored as glycogen (about 2400 cals worth) and used as the main energy source. Fat is also used as an energy source. Whatever your body doesn't use, be it Fat, Carb, or Protein is stored as fat. So, simply make sure your energy use and energy taken in is equal and u remain the same wt. A low carb diet is a bad diet it, drops ur blood sugar to amazingly low levels. That can seriously f*** up your body. There is a reason why we have Insulin, and Glucagon. Glucagon increases glucose levels in the blood. Insulin gets this glucose to the cells. Simply put...your body needs the glucose that starts out as a carbohydrate.
The Adkins diet has been around a long time. It was in favor, then it went out of favor and not it's back in favor. Why? There are many many studies and reports saying most calories should be from carbs and few that say what Adkins is saying. The media reports on what stands out, what is newsworthy. Think about it.
As I said before: 60% carb, 10-30% fat, remaining % as protein. Keep cal intake equal or less than cal expendature. Simple math.
Adkins is a fool.
