Of course there is considerable harm, and they certainly don't help.
According to him he has done nothing wrong ever.
I read the book, big ego. Had the restaurant and felt bad for selling alcohol. Really? Not profitable if you don't. Now pushes the envelope with much worse. Writing to make yourself feel better about his decisions.
Alcohol is legal for sale. No special Dr. Brown prescription is required.
Pushing the supplement envelop requires special prescriptions, or assuming WADA hasn't banned something yet, so use all that you can without concern.

I was surprised to read what appeared to be a contradiction though. When he first started taking Prozac at the suggestion of a psychiatrist friend, he said that his running immediately improved. He was suddenly able to run mile repeats at 4:45 pace instead of the usual 5:00 pace. But then he writes how SSRIs are known to decrease athletic performance and that's why they're not on the list of banned substances for runners.
What is the verdict on this?
I can vouch for this. Immediately after starting fluoxetine (generic Prozac), my paces improved by similar margins. I remember cooling down and being pumped but incredulous at the same time. Not only was I running my reps faster but it was easier. This was 10 yrs ago and since then I have stopped taking that poison. Nothing else in my life had changed at that time besides starting that medication, so for me the correlation was clear.
