The dude wasn't a runner. He was a spectator that interfered with a race. Like people have repeatedly pointed out, ANY other sport, the person would be forcibly tackled and arrested. Sounds like the officials took the diplomatic approach at first.
The official did choose a peculiar way of physically subduing him. And I certainly wouldn't have wished a broken collar bone on anyone.
However, it's really hard to care that much. It's very easy to see how this guy made choices that led to all these situations so I'm unsure at what point I can extend much sympathy.

How do you disqualify he who is not qualified to run in the first place?
The athlete was forbidden to run, and told to cease running multiple times. He completely disrespected and ignored the rules. Now I don't ever condone violence as the the first answer to a problem...However, sometimes the only method by which people like this learn their lesson is through harsh physical punishment.

This is correct. He couldn't be disqualfied, because he wasn't entered.
Therefore, he should have been allowed to run, and the official is at fault.
It's fine to tackle the guy. Let's not get crazy here. He did not deserve to be killed for trying to bandit the race.

If this official's behavior became common practice the fight against drug cheats would become much more difficult. Those who cheat are cynical. They cheat out of the mistaken belief that athletics only masquerades as a meritocracy. They feel that "well everyone else cheats so I will just do the same." Those of us do would never cheat are of course very frustrated by this. We feel that a sport, arbitrary though it is, has rules and that within the rules, the fastest runner wins. What this official did is more or less falling into the same mindset of the drug cheats--"I can't get what I want by being civil, so I will just do whatever it takes." Hirt presented no threat to anyone else. He wasn't attacking someone. He didn't belong there, but the precedent of being violent is not good. It will just further emboldened others to "do whatever it takes."
Your point about the Olympic 5,000 makes no sense either. The Olympics is an entirely different context. Anyone who tries to jump the fence in the there will be stopped one way or another, possibly in this era by a bullet in the head. And anyhow, the issue of a rogue bandit jumping into an Olympic final is not any more likely to occur if the officials at a cross country meet chose to take the high road.
What is most interesting about this debate is the sense of hopelessness that track fans seem to have about the effort to boot out drug cheats. I am certainly at the point of giving up myself, but not so much that I want to resort to literal kicking. Perhaps some of you find it funny or appropriate that an official resorts to violence because you are angry that our sport's governing bodies are anemic in the fight against cheaters. It is certainly true that the IOC, the IAAF and most of our national organizations are rotten nearly to the core. They have been lenient against drug cheats, and they have often been complicit in aiding and abetting drug cheating. Maybe that French official is like the rest of us who want lifetime bans for drug cheats? But what he did was wrong, and I hope he get's prosecuted, as surely he would if he tried that at any event on this side of the Atlantic.

WHAT???

C'mon man, that was a failure. If the official *had* actually attacked the runner with a bat, bashing him with it, pretty much no one would be defending him. He tripped him onto the grass. Maybe that was not the best course of action, but for all the people decrying the "violence!" ("think of the children!!"), c'mon, grow a pair, it wasn't much of an attack. It was trip, that he telegraphed from 100 meters away, onto grass. Oh the humanity!!
( It's happened 100000000000000000 times in soccer, it's happened 100000000000000000000000000000000 on playground across america. Maybe none of those times was it a nice thing to do, but with all the world's REAL violence problems going on, a trip is not something to get too teary eyed over, especially when done to a cheater who forced his way onto the race course when he was told not to)

The runner brought the violence upon himself by banditing the race. Good riddance to both drug cheats and race bandits!

But now about this race, someone said that the guy who tripped the runner should be prosecuted? Ok, with what? Probably assault, right? Definitely not "assault with a deadly weapon". Ok great, so the tripper might spend a day in jail for assault, and pay a small fine. Big whoop. (I am assuming he has a clean record.) Ok, so big deal. Isn't it worth it? hell yeah!

The bottom line is that the French official assaulted the competitor. The race was not the Olympics or World Championships in which case security would warrant such action. The competitor was clearly endangering nobody at all.
I wouldn't have tripped the guy, and I wouldn't have advised anyone to, but I have to say I'm glad it happened. It shows that there are some people who are literally willing to fight to save our sport. It also further stigmatizes dopers by dramatically illustrating what "we" think of them.

Blah Blah....and streakers at soccer games and golf tournaments and nfl games are also clearly not endangering anyone at all. They get gang tackled by security, and hauled away in cuffs. Half the time they get charged with trespassing, and half the time they just get sent away, banned from ever returning to the site. How about that streaker this last year that got laid out by the NFL player? Did the NFL player get charged with assault? No. Because you TRESPASS AND JUMP INTO AN EVENT YOU AREN'T ALLOWED IN, YOU KNOW THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES.
