The RAK half just concluded and viewers on the live thread started pointing out the best video coverage was being shot by a drone flying just above the lead runners. It wasn't a helicopter because it wasn't as high a vantage point. The produce clearly loved the drone as he kept going to that video instead of the motorbike as the motorbike has a little chop from the pavement. The video was pretty awesome I must say. Early on in the race there was no sound and I was thinking to myself, "this video is stunning" not realizing it was a completely different vantage point than I had ever seen. I then realized I've never heard of a drone being used to shoot a race. Has anyone else seen it? Anyone have any guess as to what type of drone it would be? Well done RAK Half.

I think it is very clear that the vast majority of people who have replied to this thread:

1. Have not viewed the RAK half marathon footage to see exactly what type of filming took place.

2. When you say drones have been used for years during races, I don't think they have been used in the way the RAK used them.

Every single link to videos in this entire thread have been very high aerial shots of races or just scenery. The RAK (and what this thread is REALLY about) used the drone footage as the main live video feed following the runners from just 10-30 feet away in place of a guy holding a camera on a motorcycle. I HIGHLY doubt a drone has been used in the way the RAK used them before this past race. If it has been used that way, I'd love to see the footage, and you can call me an idiot.

Aware that they are not the same, but thought the metallic foot shown in one shot was part of a drone frame. I stand corrected.

While then off-topic, those Dubai skyline scenes were nonetheless fantastic.

To everyone saying drones have been used to film races before: WE KNOW. This was (presumably) the first time that a multirotor was used to capture live video for a broadcast of a road race.

It's expensive as hell to equip a commercial drone the US. 1st of all commercial drones cannot use WIFI. 2nd commercial drones have to be flown by FAA licensed commercial pilots. 3rd insurance and liability. I don't think it's feasible in the near future.

Please point me to ONE single instance where a drone was used in the manner is was used at the RAK Half. Give me a link or a website or something.

No body cares if a drone was used for 300 foot scenery gathering B-Role or of a film of the runners from 200 feet up in the air. That is not what the thread is about at all. It's not so much about the use of drones, but HOW the drones are used.

Show me an instance that used a drone in replacement of a lead car/motorcycle with a cameraman on it.

They use drones to film criterium bike races sometimes too. Looks pretty sweet.
