Hodgie-san, Could not agree more with the Coaching angle.
The best guys I have worked with here in NZ did not have fancy Certificates stating their qualications. They had results based qualifications and their Coaching philosophy was SIMPLE. I include Arthur Lydiard and Arch Jelley in that group.
Not long ago I was talking to my first "Boss" from my first High School Teaching job.
He is a rather eccentric Hungarian and a bloody good field events Coach.
He made the comment "We have had 1000 people qualify for level 1 Coaching Certificates. Where are the 1000 athletes ? !!".
This statement was made while we were watching a Track meet where at least 500 of those Coaches should have been present.
How many were there : None !!!!

There was a great thread here several weeks back about an old British runner called Adrian Royle, I hope I spelled his name right. Someone mentioned, very early in the thread, that Royle was dead. A few posts later Royle himself expressed some surprise about that. I once ran a web search on myself and learned that I'd been killed in a submarine accident in 1968. Maybe death is less permanent than we've been lead to believe.

On the fasting subject, I am sceptical, because eating healthy is also a function of the amount of calories burned and used.
Assuming that someone runs 20km a day (even slowly) and subsists on a diet of 1000 calories a day - this runner will not absorb enough calories to maintain weight at a reasonable level.
Look at the Tour de France cyclists....ok they are doing much more than runners, but they take in around 5000-6000 calories a day.....and all of them are thin...with extremely low body fat stats.
Yes - being thin is good, but the important thing is having a good power to weight ratio, and in that regard if you look at Kenenisa Bekele, he is quite stocky and muscular, and I am sure he eats quite a bit more than 1000 calories a day.
I remember seeing the Kenyans in London, and Nice. They are always drinking tea with milk and sugar, with biscuits, or toast. They also eat more than 1000 calories.
The important thing is to eat according to your energy needs, and I do not think that 1000 calories a day for the long term, for an active athlete would be beneficial.
Lopes used to like eating fatty steaks....even a few hours before training..
Van Aaken was talking about losing weight not everyday diet. Look at the best they are thin.

Since a long ago...i´m glad that you post here. Personally i feel more comfortable in Let´s RunCom than in some other sites, that´s more democratic = (in the pureness meaning of the world that "we are all equal" not “democratic” political meaning or party). Here i don´t feel the hierarchic pressure or Administrator big authority.
There are also some rubbish but this is the “dark side” of the whole free of expression process.
Regarding your question. I think that JZS is right. To eat 1000calories a day and training slow runs that´s not a shape up conditioning for the competitive period, but I see that more as a weight loss for those who are fate they should be to run and compete or daily life. So, that diet regimen that´s a confined period if you enter in competitions – eventually you try that out of season and not in a competitive period or during an hard training phase.
But as far as I understand and discussed that directly with van Aaken he used that diet for himself as a “life philosophy” and “thin diet concern” more than to shape competition conditioning. Now when your body weight did reduce and stabilize in thinness you move up to hard training and competition concerns.
That´s right that when you are exposed into an hard training or continuous efforts as Tour de France there´s no way you can have success with that “thin diet”. That will turn you down. But that´s right also that some top cycle runners they use a thin diet after the rest period. About that subject please go to Dr. Michele Ferrari advises for a diet.

Now about Lopes. That´s intresting that you remember me that. Effectively Carlos Lopes, when heathly and in very good shpe condition he was a ”eating and drinking animal”, but if you take a look to Lopes photos in competition you see a “natural” very think guy, in the van Aaken weight/tall model profile. But since he stops training quickly he gets overweight. In Kilos (I´m not able to convert the figures to american measures) –Lopes that´s a 1.68 metres tall with a shape weight of 52 kilos. But when he stops to train in 3 months he is with more than 80 kilos, and recently he get the 100kilos weight. That´s when the heathly problems they arrive, and the medicine man advise him to stop eating. In mid August I was present in a old runner champ funeral ceremony – that´s the Portuguese runner Manuel Faria – that did win over Zatopec several times.
Lopes was also there for a last “good bye” and we old runners we were very atonish – Lopes did loose in 2 months more than 30 kilos ! he seems the same elegant figure we was as a runner. I ask him: Are you running again ? No simply I stop to eat like an animal by medical advise and as soon as I cut off some heavy food stuff my weight gets down quickly ! Once again Lopes that´s unique in his style.

One question for you. Why you say van Achin to van Aaken. I understand that sounds a bit grman look like that "van", but more starnge for me that´s your nickname Hodgie-san. I don´t know really what that means (if it means something) but for me it sounds like Chineese or japaneese than american. Since i´m from portuguese mother language i undrestand and made me undrestand in spain (castellian), galician (spain Galicia dialect), french very correctly, italien, Romenian, a bit of english. But Hodgie-san that´s one of the most strange names or nick names i really can´t undrestand the meaning and to spell and it sounds me all but not english. Can you answer to my curiosity ?

PS- By the way for those who don´t know yet Portugal that means PORT OF GALIA (PORT=Porto) (GALIA=Gal). The ancient history and and the fairy tales say that in the coasts of my land the people from Galia comes to the south by ship crosssing over the Atlantic ocean and made from the coasts of the place that´s now my country his favourite ports to aeat and rest and recover.

His nickname:
His name is Bobb Hodge, he of the 2:10:59 marathon PR (but maybe you knew that part Antonion??) So his nickname was Hodgie probably at first. Now it morphed into Hodgie-san (by others or himself, I am not sure), because Mr Hodge likes to write in the manner of teacher-pupil relationship one sees with Martial artist lore: Sensei (i.e., master) to pupil.
"Fundamentally this is the function of a sensei—to create situations where the student arrives at understanding through his own experience. " Hodgie likes to do just that: not tell a runner to do EXACTLY this or that, but instead give him ideas and general guidelines so he can learn himself. This is a common idea in Asian culture: one needs a master to guide one, but in the end, only the individual can become enlightened on his own (the master just prepares the pupils mind, and shows him a path to enlightenment). Hodgie-san often writes in the style of an Asian teacher, right down to the slightly incorrect English grammar ( :-) ).
The "van achen" "joke." That 's what it is, a joke: to ache means to hurt, and I believe that Hodgie decided that any coach preaching up to 30 miles a day, with 5 hours of sleep and regular fasts must have his athletes "aching" all the time.

What about Mamede, the Castro, Monteiro, Canario, and people like that...what are they doing now, and did they also put on weight and become unhealthy? Pinto?
It seems that when Portuguese runners retire, they stop running completely, whereas the British, American and Northern European runners still jog for fitness, even when they stop competing. Different cultures?
I remember reading once that the average Portuguese person hates to run, and does not appreciate what a great running history Portugal has. I also recall stories about elite Portuguese runners being insulted when they went training on the roads. They were told to stop "wasting time," and to "get a job!"
Could you give us some insight into the typical diet of elite Portuguese runners.
