I went into it trying to be clear that this was just a casual lunch to say good bye. But it sounds like he took my initial agreement and is trying to get more out of it.

Since we are meeting today it feels like a poor gesture/not common courtesy to back out now. But I really am going to have to stick to it, have lunch, and then say "I need to get going, good luck."

If he keeps asking why only this time would work, if I really am that busy (when we are in person) I'll just stick to the point that I had things to do/not entertain it (don't want to be too harsh and say I put things at higher priority because he was no longer part of my life, because he's moving across the country now and I empathize with that).

The dudes possibly still likes you in romantic way. Or, just enjoys your company and wants to hang out.Sure, regardless he would like to see you naked but just don't drink much and leave it at a hug. He will be fine with that too.

When he texted Happy birthday it was a way of feeling things out and see if a response came. However, outside of that he left you alone outside of the moving deal. Hence, you can tell he is sane.Also, you didn't date that long, so I doubt he is heartbroken or anything.

You are empathizing about his losing his job and moving across the country, neither of which are a big deal for most young adults without kids. The guy sounds manipulative. Since you are also an adult and do not want to go, you should not go. If you feel it is too late for that, for some reason, just go and keep it simple. If he discusses the relationship in any way that is not entirely comfortable, tell him to stop. If he does not stop, excuse yourself for the rest room and just leave.

Before I settled into a polyamorous relationship I was a serial monogamist.

With 5 partnerships ranging in durations of 1 to 8 years not one of them ended poorly. Not surprising as they were, going in, open ended until whenever type things. We have remained friends and have contact to some degree. Two remained socially close but not intimate. A third one is cross country and in that distance and the passage of time has reduced us to the special occasion phone call and a shared This Is Funny chain e-mail. The other two became principals in that polyamorous group.

Dating should be open ended. All too often the 'this can be forever' mindset sets in too soon. The long term bonding thoughts should not come before a full exploration of the wants and needs of the partners. Compatibility in nourishing a short term nonexclusive relationship is a first step that so many miss. By living in the short term a game plan for the long term will emerge if it should.

Rushing through the casual dating, going steady, sexual exclusiveness, long term commitments phases just lay the ground work for bad breakups.
