Don't think he should lose his job over this one incident. In my opinion if you know the schedule for the season why are you doing a workout the day before a meet. Use a meet that is going to fall a day from a workout as the workout. Running 6:50 pace is a joke and makes a mockery of the sport. Its one thing to hold back and tell your guys to take it easy the first mile and then its another to jog the whole race. Also as others pointed out if conditions where really that bad then the meet should have been cancelled or coaches warned about the extreme conditions. Next time maybe he will ask the kids to jog a bit faster. I don't think cross at cincy is not getting better anytime soon. The coach sets the tone for the program. He deserves a few more years to change things then maybe fire him if the AD still is not happy with him.

Isn't that a USATF/IAAF rule and not an NCAA rule? Does the NCAA have anything comparable?

I don't really understand why they didn't just tempo it. Still preserves the athletes but is a lot less ridiculous than just jogging the course to get a scored meet. Plus it gets a workout in.

I feel like a d!ck for saying it, but I'm surprised that a team at a school like Cincinnati would have guys running 7 minute pace even on their easiest of recovery runs.

Article said temps were 100F.

NKU took a big risk not cancelling the meet.

I agree and I really don't understand how Arkansas had four running 45 minutes for their home meet 10K in 2012. Even if they were B team, I would guess that is a lesser run than 90% of their practices. Maybe they did some form drills or dynamic stretches during the race.

It sounds like a good call.... if they ran 16:00 and did some hard strides after. 21:00 is a joke

This is somewhat similar to what many of the top NCAA football schools do. They play a far lesser opponent and let their first team take it easy: like it was a scrimmage.

Cincy should have scheduled a very weak opponent whose best 5k males could only run 7-8 minute pace, and women 8-10 minute mile pace. Then the slow times would be considered a type of mercy running.

I have never heard of anything more ridiculous! Maybe the conditions were tough but what if it ends up being hot at one of the bigger meets later on in the season? Will the team just jog it and save themselves for something else? That is totally overthinking things and it sends a bad message to the team about competing and toughness.

When my cousin was a senior at a very small HS in Iowa, their team chances for a state place as a team were ruined because their 2nd runner got heat exhaustion at their season opening home meet.

He wasn't better than the 5th runner for the rest of the year and never returned to his peak form, even the year after.

I'm guessing that the 3-5 runners would have preferred running at state to running all out in early September.

He was still feeling the effects of heat exhaustion (not even heat stroke?) two months later? And none of the other kids who raced were affected? I think he had something else going on. Like too much sand in his vajayjay.

Pretty much everyone has trained through a meet before. That's understandable, especially for the first meet of the season. But if a DI women's team averaged 21:00 for a 5k, I'd say they were jogging. A DI men's team doing this is just pathetic. They literally ran slower for a race than they did for a training run.

And that "it felt like 100 degrees" is meaningless. The heat index is one of the most worthless measures of weather. The measured dewpoint for that time of day was in the low 70s. A bit uncomfortable, but not dangerous by any means.

There can't seriously be any teams that slow... right? That's an easy pace for a decent masters running club.

Yea, his body was absolutely trashed. He collapsed in the chute, was put on a stretcher was, hauled off in an ambulance and spent the night in the hospital.

The biggest problem was that he felt like garbage throughout the race and ran his heart out so they would have a chance to win the meet. He had no idea how to lay off and not endanger himself.

I suck at reading and apparently remembering. It was Heat Stroke, not heat exhaustion.

Once you get heat stroke, you're more susceptible to it in the future...which goes beyond your HS/college glory days. I've run in worse, but I'm billy badass like everyone else on this board. I could give two craps about what Cincy's XC team decided to do for a no-name meet in Sept of 2014. But have fun telling your grandkids about the rage you felt for the dishonor these faux XC warriors and how they shamed your great sport, of which you are the second-coming of Christ: judge and redeemer of all who gather before your message board posts. #gatheringofthetrolls

Failing to break 21 even when you are taking it easy is really baffling. Way back when, I competed in Division 1 and although I wasn't by any means great, my normal runs were done at a pace faster than these guys just completed their 5ks.

The Eastern Kentucky mens/womens teams ran this race as a workout, taking the first 3k or so "easy" then pushing last mile. A respectable tactic and still got a good workout in without "damaging" their runners. No doubt they are looking towards NCAA's as the priority, but still used this meet constructively.

Seems disrespectful to run in your own meet (Queen City Invitational) which has been a tradition for 30+ years and take it as a shakeout run.
