Due to humid conditions the coach told the team the "take it easy". Men averaged 21:10 with women at 24:41, coach said he looks forward to their "real season opener" in two weeks. What do you think? seems pretty lame to me to essentially forfeit.

Probably some school athletics rule that they have to compete X number of times. Otherwise it's a big meet, they should have just DNSed and no one would notice.
It's not what I would have hired him to do.
So I would let him go.
Oh please, people claim on here all the time that hs and NCAA athletes are way over raced.... And they are. So this guy does the sensible thing and gets attacked for it?
Only on lrc....

I hope you realize that the opinions expressed by the four other people in this thread do not represent a unanimous Letsrun opinion.

At first I thought it was a 6K and thought it wasn't so bad, nope 5K.

From the article:
"Due to NCAA regulations regarding the date UC began preseason practice, the Bearcats had to get a scored meet in by Friday night."
Still super lame. I don't care how hot it is, you don't run a 21:00 5k.

This is what the B team is for. Give them a chance to shine.
I'm pretty sure they'll get dinged with the honest effort rule.
Should have raced it as a fartlek or tempo, taken a water break after the race, and then run the course again as another tempo/fartlek for a total of 6.2 miles. Schools do that all the time, sometimes at their home invitational (Eg Stanford). Some of the guys on that team are on scholarship. Freaking dumb. That coach should be FIRED.
Good thing they took it easy this weekend. When Cincinnati places in the top three at nationals, they'll look back on this day and realize the extra rest was what propelled them to the podium.
What's the point of college cross country anymore? Even B-level teams (is Cincinnati even that?) are scared to actually make an effort. If running an 5k in September is going to ruin your entire fall, you've got problems that jogging a 21:10 won't solve.
Just cancel the whole season. Have a regional meet, then a national meet. And some teams will still probably jog through regionals. Maybe just send judges out to practices and award a champion that way?
If you are going to put on your school's uniform and run in your home meet, at least break 20 minutes.
To me, it looks like they tried too hard to prove that they weren't trying hard.
Dingman - you could run backwards and as long as five cross a finished line it counts as a meet
Boom Roasted
hingle mccring'- doubtful the nationally ranked Stanford Cards would have done a workout in those temps
Boom Roasted
faster in the am- until the NCAA changes their qualifying process September meets are gonna mean nothing

johny- nku was listed as the host school

lots of interest in a b level team running their b team in a b meet. to b continued
Hey, they still beat one Men's team!
seems odd that they wouldn't just have their jv guys run it. They could have just run it with their 8-14 or 6-12 or something and held out their top guys until the next meet.
Fcking lamest thing ever. Bunch of Pssies
You think Arkansas ever did anything like this?
I'm sure they ran a couple races in hot temps.
This coach should get fired
Are we really now comparing Ciny to Ark?

Didn't Arkansas lose some titles for cheating a few years back. Both programs in question look to be not great.
I'm hoping the Cincy guys regret wimping out here though. We all make mistakes.
Can't they be DQ'd for not putting forth an honest effort?
