Jogging is not running, and whoever is training Bradley is training him to jog not RUN.

i don't think you know what a farlek is. If jogging at 12 minute pace most of the time and then doing a hard sprint for 30 meters every few minutes is how you're doing it, you're doing it wrong.

Usain Bolt, or any other top sprinter, needs maybe 30 m or so to reach top speed. Footballers have positions, work with their teammates, and rarely need to go that far on a single sprint.

The tough parts in football, from the standpoint of energy expenditure, are the quick starts and stops, and controlling and challenging for the ball. When I coach kids, I might have them jog or dribble farther to warm up or down, or sprint a bit farther just to have a relay competition, but I limit sprints to about 25 yd. (I coach rec level, and it takes ten weeks of training to get them close to what I remember as a modest workout for track.)

In football, normally the ref runs more than anyone else in miles, but does not have to challenge or control balls, and does not accelerate or run at top speed, because one's head bounces too much to see well. The ref does not make quick adjustments to catch up for distance as much as to get a better angle.

Well that's my question. How are these measurement made with any sort of scientific accuracy? Even if they use GPS there are large amounts of error especially when measured in a pitch with back and forth movement (rather than a point to point).

It's done with multiple video cameras recording the activity on the playing field. While I don't doubt the implementation is non-trivial, the concept isn't hard to understand. The link is a teaser video from a 6 camera system. My understanding is that they are using more than that for the World Cup games.
