If a guy ran an 800 in 1:52, and then a month later ran 3:45 for a mile, people would be very sceptical.

mile:800::10:5 is not 100% correlated. But similar performance outcomes.

I did not see the splits from Oxy. Weather and rest play a part. But this is a bit extreme.

It has been referenced several times, and may be tough to find the video now, but in 2007 he finished his 27:32 race with about 2:00 last 800. That was 7 years ago and he was a college junior. It didn't come from nowhere.

It has been mentioned many times but in 2009 he radically changed his training to work out with guys who are currently among the top milers in the US. Jordan MacNamara, Centro & Wheating. Throw in Acosta who ran 3:36 and Kiptoo-Biwott who was a sub 4:00 guy. He also began racing 800 meter races and frequently 1500/mile races. Guess what he got faster and they've incorporated more speed into their training ever since. He has raced probably 3-5 1500/mile races per year since 2009. Prior to that there may have been years that he didn't race any or mabye 1.

Look at the gaps above where he had years of not racing 1500 or mile. Is it not logical that when he started actually racing 800s and 1500s and working out with 1500 guys he could have cultivated his speed (4:01 high school mile) further?

as a 9th grader I ran 2:06 for all out 800. As a 12th grader I could close out a 3200 in 2:07 for sub 9:10. I could run 2:06 - 2:04 for 1600.

World of difference from my all out 800 4 years prior, but I did it. I could also run 1:54 for 800 then.

Komen was notorious for heavy cycles, considered heavy even for the EPO Era. Apparently very cocky as well and not liked on the circuit. This is another monumentally stupid post. Like you said, the relationship between mile and the 800 isn't the same as the relationship between the 5k and the 10k.

Attention Letsrun Retards: Nobody is going to break Daniel Komen's 3k or 2-mile w.r. Just as nobody is going to break the women's 1500m or 3k records. Nobody will break hicham's 1500m or mile records either. Oh, and Rupp is doped. Most of the top runners are using special supplements, technologies that are performance enhancing and not banned, and certain substances that are banned. If there's a loophole, they exploit it. Agree here. Too many drug cheats, to think a clean Rupp could beat most of them. Runners at the very top are almost all dirty. Marion Jones didn't test positive for years.

You know it could be quite possible he didn't rest up for that 13:20, a little tired from hard training, and it was warm and he didn't want to kill himself in a meaningless race by kicking at 1000 to go and winning in 13:15.

Just got outkicked in a slowish race (for him).

After that race, more recovery days, and better conditions he drops 13:22 twice.

I haven't watched the video of the Oxy 5000 but I watched the Prefontaine 10k and I have never seen an American runner in a 10,000 look so relaxed in contrast to the Africans around him at the front.

It looked like he could have run 10 seconds faster.

I would give him the benefit of doubt that he was overconfident of his competition in that 5000 and didn't take it seriously. Thought he would sit and be able to win on the last lap but came up just short.

This is super simple. A runner who was better than Rupp beat him on a day when Rupp was obviously kicking and trying to win.
