My buddy was a 1:53-1:54 800m runner who also ran cross country for the school and was in the high 26's - low 27s for 8km. He did a couple sprint workouts for shits and ran 11.03 in the 800m (while wearing a bodysuit). Arguably, he probably should have been a sprinter, or at least a 400m runner, but to argue that Brandon Johnson and Duane Solomon could not break 11.0 for the 100m is ridiculous.

It's more than just those states. It's more like the entire east coast and west coast plus Texas. You need to be running 46-47 to win in those states in a typical year.
well, Laura Roesler, an 800m runner at Oregon, won the state title in HS at least once for every running event from 100m up to cross country including the hurdle events... this I got from commentators at NCAA indoors last year, so if I'm incorrect blame them.
well what are we defining as a "competitive" state?
I don't think Texas, Florida or Caligornia should be in this discussion as its obvious they are far superior in depth and quality to every other state, and there are obviously more than 3 states that are competitive.
I think Indiana is a good benchmark for a competitive if not elite HS state meet.
The average winning times are
100m - 10.6-10.7
200m - 21.5ish
400m - 47.5-48.0
800m - 1:52-1:53
1600 - 4:07ish
3200 - 9-flat
I don't know about Rudisha in the 100 (think he could grab the 200 with his 400m capability) but everything else is a solid bit, obviously Rudys 3200 is up for speculation but given that hes a probable sub-4 miler or at least very close to it I think ~9:00 or better a fairly safe bet.
PS Hardloper is an incompetent poster.
Matt Scherer (20.89/45.19/1:46) would have been a good candidate about 2007 (3200 would be tough, but at least we know he would pace it perfectly :)

Probably not. Olympic caliber 1500 guys could easily win everything except the 100, 200 & 400 (not looking at hurdles). The 400 would be close though. Olympic caliber sprinters could only take the 100, 200 & 400.
A great decathlete would probably win the most events. It's not likely he could take the 1600 and certainly not the 3200.
Probably Gebresilasie in his prime had the potential Morcelli and el Guerroi and of course Aouita all could did the task and i think that the 100s could be extremely dificult to do.
Chuck Norris did it once as a warm up to a marathon later that day.
The best answer for current U.S. runners is Brandon Johnson. 10.47 100m PB (granted, that was 2002), 1:43 800 and 3:53 1500. The 3200 might be too much for him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could run 9:05. Worldwide, Rudisha or Aman would be candidates, or it might be some random 46.xx European with remarkable range.
Rudisha clearly wins the 400 and should win the 200.
I give him a good shot in the 100 having 45 speed.
He'd win the 1600 very likely.
He could have the fitness to hang on in the 3200.
The best 400 runners, like James or Merritt are not likely to win the 1600 and surely not the 3200.
They'd even struggle in the 800 in some cases.
It's a severe jump up from the 400, conditioning wise and experience wise.
A speedy 800 runner will be able to give more moving down in distance.
Kiprop would fair better at this than any 400 runner.
Obey Moore could win from the 100 thru 1500.
Being that most middle distance runners can't hurdle, it would have to be a decathlete capable of running 11.0 in the 100m and 10:00 in the 2 mile. I think Beach for sure and perhaps Eaton as well. Obviously it can't be a state with really fast sprinters or distance runners and it would have to be a state which stages their championship over 2 days.
