If she is truly running 25:35 5 milers on the track during training...in late December no less, I reckon she is faster than Shalane at 10,000M.

Remember that Brenda's passion is the Marathon and she feels like that will ultimately be her best event. She is Mexican... aerobic monster.
That's one sexy training schedule.
Her favorite event is the 1500, and I bet that will be her focus next year. She was so close to getting under 4:00.
Near term, she is putting in the work to prepare for some indoor racing. It will be interesting to see what distances she chooses.

Her training is badly misguided.
How would you know?
The anaerobic tempos interest me...are these primarily used for MID-D runners?
Read her RW interview... she is infatuated with the Marathon.

Could post the interview, I can't seem to find it.
Beautiful Lady with Great Heart.
If workouts are acccurate, no reason she can't go 4:15 at Millrose.
No doubt she is All In.
Stay healthy Ms. Martinez.
Looking Foward to 2014.

She did not really come from a big name program to now being coached by joe vigil. I think consistency in improving her aerobic base over 2 yrs under the watch of vigil is paying off. She has always had the speed but now she has speed and endurance. 203 and 413 were the fastest prs i had seen, those were hit her junior yr.
I believe she ran 4:09 and 2:01-ish in Europe the summer after her junior year.

Brenda has a very nice print.
That is a screenshot of an iPad app.
Medalist in the World Champs! I don't think people need to worry too much about her training; except learn. And she's coached by Joe Vigil who I would say knows what he's doing.
Her 5k PR is 16:23, from 2012. The Runworks calculator says her 25:35 5-mile "base training" run is equivalent to 15:28 5k. Pretty good improvement. Makes me feel like a loser.

She ran 15:30.81 at a small meet at Caltech last year.

I was looking at this:

I love coach Vigil and think he is a great leader, one of those that come around not very often that has a great ability to get people to believe in themselves, by in fully and do things they never thought possible.
While I see the physiological basis of his training and believe in it up until the final 3 weeks of the season. I have a hard time buying into essentially running a mile time trial the Monday before the Saturday National Championships. Not that it hasn't worked but aren't you running the race before the race?
And the milers do all out 400's every day up through the rounds and final. Why is she doing 54-55 second 400's the day before?
I've read the book, I get the science behind it. But is this seriously the best way. Are his athletes so well trained an all out 400 the day before is an easy day?
Can someone explain here how the last 3-4 weeks of the season work and the success and failures here? I'm wondering specifically about running regionals, then a mile time trial, then nationals.

Don't over think it. Vigil has a formula that works. He modified it for his collegians with many years of success , he adapted it for his post collegiate elites.
Without question his approach is hard training for developing athletes physiologically and mentally. What separates Vigil from others is that he understands coaching athletes to an elite international level. Prepare them for anything that might come their way in the course of competition. If your a coach take the time to attend one of his talks.
