Sure there is a lot of crude, racist and pure hateful things on here. But I'd bet that a lot of it is just trolling and they don't really believe everything they say. They just want to get a rise out of someone for their own, and others', entertainment. At least that's what I tell myself so I can still have hope for society.
LRC forum posts inspire a lot of the articles you see written on Runners World, Running Times, and other legit publications. I have said stuff on letsrun on more than one occasion and saw it repeated in an article somewhere. Running-journalists definitely lurk here and get ideas from the posts.

This really resonates with me and is why I've been coming here daily for years. I rarely post anything directly running related, but I've just found runners to have similar minds to my own, and with so many people here, you get a lot of people with different experiences, perspectives, and knowledge. I have tried posting on other messageboards related to other things about me but have had terrible luck. For whatever reason, runners just seem to click with each other. The life and marriage advice I've read on here from older guys has been invaluable to me.

I think by not registering people say things they are afraid to say in the real world. Are their negatives associated with that? Yes. But positives as well.
The real old timers complain that training isn't talked about as much as it used to be but i think that's probably because the internet is 15 years old. It's no longer hard to figure out hard to train properly like it was in 1998 when the RWordls of the world were telling you less is more.
I don't think that the racism or sexism has changed all that much from the early days. I suppose it was a friendlier place VERY early on, but for most of the history of the board, there's been plenty of objectionable content. Frankly, it's never bothered me much, and I'm surprised that it bothers other people. It's one thing to have to interact with racist people in a real world social situation, where they have the power to make an enlightened discourse difficult or impossible, but on the Internet it's easy to just ignore the racists and continue a discussion with the people who matter.
Also, I think it's actually valuable to see the racism and sexism on the board, because most of the people posting would probably never express those sentiments in the real world. Reading their anonymous postings reminds you that just because people may not say certain things in your daily experience doesn't mean they aren't thinking them.
If you really want the paper to reflect the character of this forum, it should contain contain spelling and grammatical errors, and it should devolve into ad hominem attacks after two pages.
One trend that I really don't understand on this board, and I'd be interested to hear opinions, is why there's so much runner-bashing these days. Presumably the vast majority of posters are, themselves, runners. So why do so many posters argue that runners are losers? This isn't something I noticed in the early days.

Fans bashing other teams, and often their own for underperforming/losing, is common in all sports. Some runners seem to expect these boards to be a hug-fest. That is not realistic.

That's not what I mean. I mean the bashing of runners in general, as a group. The whole, "runners are skinny loser weaklings who never get girlfriends" thing.
