Beat Mo the way Gebrselassie got beat in 93

Didn't even occur to me that they ever ran the 5,000 before the 10,000.

So used to it being the other way around.

Looks like 1993 was the last time they ran those events in that order.

And in subsequent Geb years, there were only 2-3 days between the 10 final and the 5 final with a 5 prelim in between.

Tough double.

So Kirui just went out and said come and get me. The other Kenyans didn't seem to help.

The Ethiopians worked together, alternating leading the second pack as they closed the gap.

But the gap was too big and the final move was too late.

Like in 95 when they ran a slow race and he outsprinted everyone for the gold. A lot of stuff can happen in slow races and when you start talking about really fast last 1200ms, there is a lot more to it than sprint speed. Geb won a lot on a kick but in those races he also had the best endurance.The 93 geb though was not the Geb that most of us think of. That is the one where he had to trip the kenyan to win to win the 10000. Over the next couple of years was when Geb and Koman rewrote the distance record books he became a much better runner.The thing about the kenyans is that there were a ton of them but only a couple lasted at the top for more than 4 years before fading out. There peaks were high but you don't remember their names because they didn't last very long.

sure geb wins a kick in a slow race but in a TT i think both were in about 12'55 - 12'57.5 shape back then ( wr 12'58 of aouita )

i perhaps might even have given a slight edge to kirui in such a race

For sure I knew that you were THINKING that - as almost on every occasion - the 10000m came first also in Stuttgart. But even with my hint that this might be wrong on this occasion you didn't get the idea to check if that's actually true. Don't you think that before stating some things AS FACTS, it would be a good idea to check if this actually is true?

As far as I know, Stuttgart was the ONLY occasion when the 5000m came first.

To state that Gebrselassie's only chance to beat Tanui in the 10k was to trip his shoe is ridiculous.

In the 96 Zurich 5000m Komen dropped a sub 60 lap from 3000-3400, which they hit in 839! (that means 3000m was way under 740!) and a 229km up to 4km (1010 - means that they averaged 232 for the first 4km - there's nobody in the world who can do that now...

Bekele's Olympic run was also simply jaw-dropping 231mid followed by a 225mid, 457 last 2000m, and a last mile in 356ish, 53.9 final lap...absolutely incredible. I think that Farah also went under 5minutes for his last 2km in London, but this was another world
