No need to be a jerk, but you are quite right. Solomon went for a relatively slow win in Edmonton and Symmonds's finish prevailed.

If anything, this will prompt Solomon to stick to his game and get out hard in Moscow.

Keep in mind that the 600m record is somewhat soft. If Rudisha had made a serious attempt at it any time in the last 2 years he would have had it without much difficulty. His 400 and 800 times are both well ahead of Solomon.

As a former 800m runner and coach the 600 converts differently for different types of runners. For Solomon its his sweet spot and only convers to about 1:43 mid. However, you lose a couple of tenths having to run around runner in a sprint.

Symmonds ran 1:13.9 time trial in practice. Practice time trial = hand time. Hand time to FAT conversion add .13 sec. Symmonds 600 is 1:14.13 then.

Correct and even if you give Symmonds 1:14.00 it's still almost a full seconds over 600m. Racing doesn't often yield great pacing as it does in time trialing where runners are alittle more relaxed. Symmonds is still a a great 800m runner with a super fast personal best; however, Duane Soloman is the USA 800m man to beat ESPECIALLY during the mid-late season and if the race goes out very fast!!!

Your math sucks and its .24 (some use .14) anyway. which would make iit either 1:14.04 or 1:14.14. He also probably jogged into it which would account for a tad more time added.

Or maybe he a referring to the fact that a self-reported time run during practice is not the same thing as a time run in a race.

in '76 he went 44.26 / 1'43.50 ->1'12.96

however the 800 was essentially a solo race & i do think he couda gone at worst 1'43-flat in a circuit 800 paced from 150 - 400 ( they had to pretty much run the whole 1st lap in lanes ! )

44.26 / 1'43.00 ->1'12.74

( more or less johnny's record but not significantly superior as i'm sure johnny woud tell us his wr race wasn't "perfect" )

as for duane, it appears he was worth a 1'13-flat from too-fast start, pacer dropping out early & having to run wide

you'd have to say there really isn't much to split the 3

as for rudy, i'm sure he was in 45-flat shape in his london race

So news out of UCLA is Johnny Gray is fired and Grey has taken position with Bolden at UCF in Orlando. Guess that means Duane Soloman will have to move out of LA to Orlando.

Because he cares about his pros while UCLA sucks

solomon is listed at 45.9 but probably is a low-mid 45 guy (400m) at peak.

symmonds lists at 47 mid, but is probably a 47 flat guy at peak.

with that data and given that these fellows are pretty much equal at 800m now, symmonds report of 1:13 high with probably a jog start makes sense. i.e. he's 1 second slower than solomon at the intermediate distance of 600m.

i think that johnny grey's best distance was probably around 600m but since he rarely ran this distance - chances are that he probably could run faster say if he ran with good competition 8 times a year.

at the end of the day, this kind of reasoning delivers the 600m to be equivalent to one of johnny's average great 800 runs.

verdict: 600m record of 1:12 high is worth an 800m 1:42 mid to high. this somewhat fuzzy logic approach is in line with simple mathematical extrapolation, is consistent with vertolin.

all of this implies that rudisha with a 45.0 and a 1:40.x can go at 600m 1:11 mid. of course if rudisha does a one off and produces a 141 effort, then he'll peg 1:12 low.

also i have a peak juantorena quite capable of 43.9 (400m) and 1:42 mid (800m) mid with at 1:11 (600m) mid also.

actually i'd take a peak juantorena over anyone period at 600m.

just saw the race.

solomon actually knows how to very well follow a pacer. problem is he only drafted for 120m and then the pacer gassed and was in the way. cas luxsom, however could have provided much better pacing till 100m out where solomon would have had a chance to close in 26 - last 200m.

also there was a bit windy which did not help.

all in all, it's clear johnny is right, solomon indeed can take the world record.

i woudn't get too worked up about what a 600 equates for 800

johhny probably had a theoretical 800 of high-1'41/1'42-flat that day, but his best distance was probably 600 & he didn't quite hang onto the "full" 800

i must say though, this wild race in '88 ( malmo kindly reminded us ) where he crushed cram & elliott was probably a 1'42-flat effort with proper pacing to the bell + proper energy distribution thruout ( became a bit tactical in last 200 ), not the "shouda been shot-at-dawn" rubbish that wabbit actually provided
