There is a video somewhere on the UK Athletics site where Jones is being interviewed about his career and training. (Sorry I can't be more specific exactly where!) I'm sure I remember him saying something along the lines of his training did not change much if at all from what he was doing for 5k, 10k, XC to what he did when he moved up to the marathon with the exception that he made sure his weekly long run was about 20 miles. Again,I'm sure I recall him saying this run would be at around 6min/mile pace.
Whatever, Jones does not seem to have been a very high mileage athlete compared to some marathoners but he did have a reputation for really pushing the pace several times a week in training. How justified this was I don't suppose anyone really knows unless they were his regular training partners!
