Greatest athletes as in now: I would would pick Eaton and Hardee's. We don't know enough about how James would perform in basic athletics. These guys have the greatest range in athletics.

Look, if these two are the greatest athletes in the world, why are there THOUSANDS making a ton more money than them. Not that how much you make somehow makes you a better athlete but if you were truly a better athlete and had the capability to be a football/basketball/... star then wouldn't you go where the money is?

As kids, until people have to dedicate their lives to a particular sport to make it professionally, the best basketball players are the best football players are the best baseball players... Lebron is a superb, even freakish, athlete. He would be GREAT at any sport.
Ashton Eaton, on the other hand, is freakishly talented in his own way but it is uncertain as to whether that would translate into outstanding success in "real" sports (football, basketball, soccer, baseball...). My suspicion is that, while he would be a heck of a lot better than your average Joe at these sports he probably could never have made it to the big leagues in any of them. Why do I think that? Because if he could have made it in the NBA/NFL/MLB then he would have literally 1000 times the fame that he currently has and 20 times the money. As such, he probably would have taken that path if it was open to him.

eaton could be a great football player (assuming he can take getting hit). he is faster and can jump higher than nearly every guy in the nfl. he probably isn't as strong as your average nfl player but that would come if he spent more time bulking up. i doubt he would be elite in the other sports but that is a big unknown.
football is the one team sport where a great athlete can show up with next to no background and do well. look at all of the guys, like gate,s who played other sports in college but who are great. i can't think of anyone in the nba or mlb who switched to that sport with no background and who is good (clearly, this doesn't apply to certain positions like QB but a lot of kickers cross over from other sports). there are guys who started late, like akeem, but he still played in college (and was a first team AA).
Ali is sooo over rated. Sonny Liston was forced by the mob to take a dive. He could have killed Ali. Mike Tyson in his prime would have really rattled Ali's brain.
Ali was a draft dodger who joined the black Muslims to avoid serving his country. Even Elvis served in the Army.
Ali could have put on exhibitions to inspire the troops.

100 speed basically is meaningless in the nfl. the 40 or even the 10 is what matters. eaton's pr is 10.21 and, regardless, there aren't that many guys in the nfl who can run faster than that. i would argue that, given his 10.2 100 speed and the fact that he can jump so well (that requires explosiveness) and throw the shot so well (that requires speed), yes, he is faster than most guys (speed position players) in the nfl.
i agree that gatlin, on paper, seems to have a lot of the raw talent to make it in the nfl:

however, these numbers don't measure hand-eye coordination (can he actually catch the ball?), how much he can take getting hit and what kind of football iq he had (he hadn't played since high school).

Ali took a huge amount of punishment, in part by strategy, in part from the extremely high quality of opponents in that era. So, near the end of his career he was a shadow of his old self. I don't remember Klitschko dominating the pro ranks in 1993 or 1994. In fact, Ali had won gold in 1960 and by 1968 had another eight years of boxing under his belt. it was a better era, with more high quality heavyweights, no doubt, i will give ali this, he fought pretty much everyone, shavers, lyle, bob foster and the previously mentioned fighters, and i still dont know how he was able to beat foreman, i know about the loosened ropes, but he let foreman pound on him for 7 rounds, until foreman was exhausted, i dont think now there is anyone who could let foreman pound on him and come back, also fighting norton with a broken jaw most of the fight, yeah ali was special.
as said before ali drew a crowd like no one.
Why do these threads bring out the Bo Jackson fanboys? He was marginal at two pro sports.... whoop de doo. If that's the standard, then Deon Sanders is tops and Brian Jordan is 2nd.... as they were better than Jackson at the same sports.
