-fair enough. i hate that i get so worked up over something like this, but i would hope anyone would feel it their duty to defend a previous teacher, or mentor, or parent, or coach; especially when the accusations are completely false. dave did quite alot for me, and i owe him significantly for that. i would not be the athlete i am today, let alone have made all american. i'm not the only guy like that.

No need to get wierd or argue about anything. i just want to know why he's not running and when he will be next?

At this point, Dave Smith is pretty much in a win-win situation.

If German never does much as a pro it will show that it wasn't really Dave's fault that he didn't live up to his promise in college. If German does great as a pro it will show that Dave did not screw him up but helped him built up a long-term base in spite of injury issues.

Either way Dave wins.

Let's give this a thought.... He had a great senior year in high school, he was absolutely phenomenal!

He goes to college and has a fantastic freshman year, NCAA champion and breaks a lot of records, also phenomenal!

From his sophomore year to the near end of his senior year in college he is basically a nobody.

Could it be that German Fernandez was a high school blow out? He trained to hard and to early in his career. It wore him down and ruined himself. None of Smith's other athletes seemed to have had the same issues as Fernandez has had, so why do we blame Smith and not blame Fernandez, or his high school coach, instead?

Fernandez retired last year. Just couldn't get past the injuries and got tired of it.

I KNOW FOR A FACT DAVE SMITH CHECKS LETSRUN. WHEN I JOINED OSU BACK IN THE DAY HE KNEW I WAS ON DYESTAT AND HAD MY ACCOUNT ON LETSRUN BANNED AFTER THE FIRST TIME I MENTIONED ANYTHING RELATED TO OSU IN A POST. SHOULD PROBABLY SPEND MORE TIME ON KEEPING PEOPLE FROM FAILING CLASSES/BURNING PEOPLE OUT INSTEAD OF ON FORUMS.

I find it hilarious that people try to pin the blame on Dave smith for German Fernandez not being entered in one race. Let's keep things in perspective.

What we do know is that one or two years of health and he'll be running incredible times. 3:34.6 in his first Euro race with about three or four months of health at the end of college, 3:55 solo indoors as a freshman, 7:47i sick as a freshman, 13:25 outdoors as a freshman, that 4:00/8:35 double. And he wasn't even 18 until he started college. Real shame he's been unhealthy so many years.

Clay don't be bitter towards Dave. He was an excellent Coach to many of the OSU runners. I know he helped a lot of us improve and he put the team on the map. When I first ran there, we were not contenders by any means. That changed after a couple years with Dave as the head coach.

However, I hope German is healthy and I am eager to see him race soon. It has been enjoyable watching Vail improve. I would like to see the same success for German.
