for whatever it is worth, in my job i deal with people with guns and people that have killed. in MY experience the gun is almost always loaded.

Suicide is the one instance where, "guns don't kill people, people kill people". The suicide rates for US/Can/Aus/Uk are almost identical. If you want to kill yourself, you will, regardless of whether a gun is available.

In the case of murder, however, gun regulation has a huge impact.

the non-gun murder rates in the US/Can/Aus/UK are ~1.3-1.6. Roughly the same. The *GUN* murder rates are 3.6/.5/.13/.03 per 100k people.

So the cost of this, "freedom" the US enjoys is 26 murders/day in the US, versus the "non-freedom" of Can/Aus/UK of .5/.08/.05 gun murders/day.

These are FACTS. Real numbers from law enforcement agencies.

Sure, there will always be anecdotal stories of somebody thwarting a crime because s/he is strapped. But what is not reported is the 26 people/day who are murdered with guns in the US. This is the real cost of the 2nd amendment.

Taking the comparisons further for the same countries by comparing the total suicide rates and the total homicide rates suggests (but does not prove) the suicides will occur without regard for the availability of guns. That is, individuals who wish to commit suicide will find an effective tool, whether or not guns are available. Note also that the suicide rates are similar or higher in the countries which are cited as having low gun death (and homicide) rates. Also the proportion of homicides which involve guns does not correlate well with restrictions on guns. While this shows the gun-related homicides in the US are still high, the picture is much different than looking at the total gun death rates. (Rates are all per 100,000 population taken from Wikipedia entries citing UN and WHO data.)

People may reach the same conclusions concerning guns, but at least their conclusions should be based on rational information, not data selectively chosen to support their conclusions.

The lack of good correlation between total homicide rates and gun restrictions I noted in my previous post suggests the major problem in the US is a propensity to resort to violence rather than the availability of guns. I think it likely some signficant percentage of the homicides would not occur without easy access to guns, but certainly not all. Thus, a significant part of the problem is societal factors other than gun availability, similar to the effect of societal factors on the suicide rate. Note that suicide rates for some of the gun restrictive countries (e.g., Japan and France) are substantially higher than the US suicide rates and also substantially higher than the US gun-related homicide rate (as well as the US total homicide rate). Certainly there are costs associated with our constitutional right to bear arms, but it is not of the scale depicted by manipulated data. Again, look at the full range of data, not data selectively chosen to support a pre-formed opinion.

Guns are not going to be banned, the 2nd Amend will stop that. The 2nd Amend is not going away. Gun violence was HIGHER in the 80s when we had the so called assualt weapon ban.

This is the problem dealing with people afraid of guns, they offer no real solutions to problems. Sam W is correct the Second Amendment is not going away and that is simply reality. It is also reality that most of the solutions the anti-gun people suggest would do nothing. All the solutions would have saved no lives at Sanduhook. He stole the guns. Gun crime seems almost universally committed by people with illegal guns. You virtually never hear of a guy with a ccw permit committing a crime with a gun.

Maybe a more realistic answer is more aggressive prosecution of gun crimes or mandatory prison sentences.

Because gun laws vary by state in the USA, I think it is appropriate to crunch the numbers and do a state by state analysis. For instance, Alaska's fire arm related death rate is higher than California's. New York is quite low compared to Texas, etc.
