Suicide is the one instance where, "guns don't kill people, people kill people". The suicide rates for US/Can/Aus/Uk are almost identical. If you want to kill yourself, you will, regardless of whether a gun is available.
In the case of murder, however, gun regulation has a huge impact.
the non-gun murder rates in the US/Can/Aus/UK are ~1.3-1.6. Roughly the same. The *GUN* murder rates are 3.6/.5/.13/.03 per 100k people.

So the cost of this, "freedom" the US enjoys is 26 murders/day in the US, versus the "non-freedom" of Can/Aus/UK of .5/.08/.05 gun murders/day.
These are FACTS. Real numbers from law enforcement agencies.
Sure, there will always be anecdotal stories of somebody thwarting a crime because s/he is strapped. But what is not reported is the 26 people/day who are murdered with guns in the US. This is the real cost of the 2nd amendment.
