Could Nick Symmonds Threaten 1000 WR?

Sounds nuts - but hear me out. Nick managed to run 1:42.95 last year while setting PRs @400 (47.45) and 1500 (3:36). With those three times - it looks like he runs that fast fast 800 not with his relatively modest aerobic talents, but instead with an incredible amount of anaerobic endurance. Ngeny had an 800m PR of only 1:44.29 - though a very very fast 1500m time of 3:28.29. To break the WR Nick would have to come through 800m in 1:45.5 and hold on for another 200. Is this possible? Looking at his 1500/800 ratio I'd think no - but looking at his 400/800 ratio I'd think...maybe.

I don't think Symmonds will ever break 1:43 again. The London track was super fast and the race was a perfect one for those being dragged behind to super fast times. A bit like the Atlanta final, where very few of the field went on to run any faster.
I reckon Symmonds is a good racer at 800 and is now capable of 1:43 low-mid when needed. That isn't going to get him close to 2:12 unless he starts running sub 3:30 for 1500.

Kaki has been quite inconsistent. I would love to know the splits in his fast 1000s--a big problem with most 1000 meter "record attempts" has been the pacing. 1000 meters is probably around the distance at which even splits become the best strategy for PRs, yet many fast 1000s are run not just with negative splits, but more negative splits (or so it seems, off the top of my head) than fast 800s.

2:11.96 is "only" 26.4/52.8/1:19.2/1:45.6 pace.

2:13.9 is "only" 26.8/53.6/1:20.3/1:47.1 pace.

why the hell does everyone immediately mention Kaki when Amos, Aman, and Kitum had better years and/or ran better in the OG final than him? i thought Kaki was off his game last season.

that said i'd put those 4 guys + Rudisha + Solomon + Makhloufi ahead of Nick on the list of guys with any type of a shot at the 1K record.

watch Makhloufi (who is in DFL over the first 200m as the 800 guys blow him out of the water at the start) come on in lane 2/3 from 15+ meters down on the homestretch before the bell - it's comical how wide he is running. despite all the time spent in lane 2 he runs 1:43 just behind Aman. i would've loved to see him run the 1K last summer (though i was disappointed he didn't pop a fast 1500m after the OGs).

NS tried to move to Malibu but couldn't afford it. I hope he eventually comes to L.A. and works out at The Factory.

Your argument is ridiculously flawed. You did a better job arguing Ngeny could have broken his own record than that Nick couldn't. Which makes an argument for Nick not against him. If he ran his 1k going out in 49.66 he probably could have run even faster. That hurt your argument not helped....I'm not sure you even know what you're arguing.

To be completely honest, I don't think Ngeny would have ran faster starting slower. Theory says he would have, but I think he was running his best when he threw himself into a situation like that.

My first thought was also that a verbal threat would be Symmonds' only approach, but from what I have learned he has quite the arsenal of guns, knives, and crossbows, so a physical threat is not improbable. He will look rather odd pointing his chosen weapon at the record and scowling. Still, he's a great runner.
