The problem is gun people do not lock up or protect their guns enough, and play with them too much. Basically gun ownership is about responsibility. Too many people act like children when they get a gun and start playing with it.
Children see adults do this and want to do it themselves. People who are mad and constantly touch firearms will use them in a moment of blind rage. Also, and this is the fault of the NRA, many people look at themselves as invincible when they own a gun.
All of these factor into the higher death rate. But on the other side of the argument you can also say those who get a gun may be doing so out of necessity and therefore may be more murder/death prone to begin with.
Either way its not simply owning a gun that increases the death rate in homes with firearms, its the responsibility that goes alongside ownership.
People who are constantly cleaning their gun, constantly using it out of some need too when they have no need, or who do not store their gun appropriately are all red flags.
That said I think anyone should be allowed to own a gun, after they go through safety courses and mental evaluations, like we do for Driver's licenses.
