MIA - Where is Alan Webb?

Does he have a Degree? Major? Job Prospects?

I would assume that a real man would not arbitrarily make up qualifications for "being a real man" and post them on an online message board, BUT...

I hate to say it as a Webb fan but I have to agree. Maybe he runs some late summer European races and does well but many people have been holding on to this type of hope for 2-3 years now. If you're done Alan just say you are done and move on, otherwise give us some actual relevant interviews or press releases stating what the hell is going on with your injuries and running career. I think the fans who keep supporting you surely deserve some legitmate updates.

This really is depressing.

Webb has taken us on such a roller coaster and it's so frustrating because many of us know that he is hands down the single most talented runner in the U.S. Even Galen and the rest of Salazar's posse acknowledged this. It just doesn't look good right now and without Worlds, his season is pretty much over.

It just seems like another year of missed opportunity for him.

remember when Willis vs Webb was a legitimate debate... then Willis with slower PB's across the board had his lifetime peak right when it mattered, nailed the race tactically and snared Olympic Silver.. all the things that talent alone can't get you.

He is probably where Ryun and Falcon where at his age - gone.

Only Scott and Spivey had lagat-like longevity. Remember Spivey ran his 5th sub 3:50 mile at 30!!

Of course everybody knows Scott ran 8 sub 3:50 miles and set a world record by running 200 sub 4 minute miles. I think at Scott's peak he ran more races in one year than webb has in the last two. In one year (I forgot) Scott ran back to back 3:50 miles two weeks apart!

It was a shame Cram and Coe overshadowed Scott during his prime, but they never ran 200 sub 4 minutes miles. That record will not be broken in our lifetime.

For all we know, Webb could be planning his exit from the sport and next steps in life (going back to school, etc.), but would rather do this away from public scrutiny.

Exactly. And perhaps he, like Ritz, understand that family is NUMBER ONE. Those guys have been under the gun of scrutiny for over a decade, they've achieved great things, made a few bucks, and don't really care what the unwashed masses of track nuts think. I cared and puzzled about Webb a few years back. Now, don't particularly care. There are others, there will always be others..

If you count his 1500 equivalent times it is indeed 200 sub 4 minute miles. However, you are correct it is the 136 that is listed as the official reocrd.

actually, i think that lukas v may be more talented than webb. certainly better, endurance-wise, when compared for age. and then, the 3:59.71, against HIGH SCHOOL ONLY competition suggests some untapped speed too. i think he could have run very close to what webb ran had there been an elite field in the race.

Spring 2001 when Webb ran 3:53, would it be outside the realm to see him run a 8:29 2M in a field loaded with world class guys, under good conditions? Certainly not. On the other hand, no one would think LV in 2011 would best Webb of 2001 at 800M. At 5K and above at age 18, its anyone's guess who would be superior. LV looks more like Ryan Hall than Webb of the 2000/2001 era, with those long flowing strides. Pointless debate..lets see how Lucas fares next year with the Ducks, and then we'll talk.

I'll amend the 5K+ thing..clearly LV would be better Spring of his senior HS year.

Webb of 2001 not doing anything special in the 3000m much less 5000m. Witness way Ritz destroyed Webb. Rupp > Ritz in 3k/5k as highschool senior. LV >= Rupp as highschool seniors.

Look at Webb's range from 800 - 10k (or if we're looking at high school, 400 - 5k).

When it comes to talent, Webb DESTROYS Lukas.
