You know, I really did spend some time thinking about this. I came up with three names:

1) Feyisa Lilesa, 2:05 marathoner. Was the first to make a push in the latter stages of Rotterdam. Perhaps unwise, as he finished last among those in the lead pack at the time (Makau, Mutai, Kipruto), but ran a huge PB.

2) Deriba Merga. It's remarkable to me that his marathon PB is only 2:06:38. I wonder if he'd have a faster PB and better placings if he raced conservatively. I think it's impossible to know.

3) Tilahun Regassa, 10K-HM road racer. Made waves with a crazy fast start at Bolder Boulder last year. I think he also ran a hard solo race at Falmouth? He's run under 1:00 for the half multiple times (including a $300K win in the UAE) but I don't know what his racing style was in those races.

Obviously these guys are road runners, not track athletes. I admit I am hard-pressed to name successful Ethiopian track runners who prefer to lead.

But what track runners of any nationality do? Josphat Menjo's Finnish races in 2010 surely represent a very unusual case, and can't be attributed to Kenyan racing style generally. And I think the Eritreans (Z. Tadese and his brother) have done more to try to break Bekele in WC 10,000m races than the Kenyans have.

So: who are the Kenyan Prefontaines?

i like to see "proper" runners who run race hard from the front & win or lose, they've given everything & it is edifying to watch

i have no interest watching parasites getting 1s/lap advantage thru drafting & winning of someone's else's hard work

choge couda easily slowed this race to a jog after 2k & then see how much of his once 1'44/3'29 speed he couda brought to the kick ( & believe me, this thopy doesn't have that in his arsenal ), but he ran it hard to satisfy promoter & crowd

if this kid front runs a coupla 7'25s or 12'48s this year, i'll happily change my stance & be happy to watch him, as i'm quite happy to watch dibaba/defar/elvan who have layed it all out when asked in their record attempts

on men's side, apart from kennster, none of his male compatriots seem this way inclined
