read above about promoters & meet rankings
these guys run the sport & to them it is primarily a business, & the way they earn more money is to get higher up the rankings table so they can negotiate better tv & sponsors money
the promoter coudn't care which of 2 africans won, but that the final clocking was as fast as possible, so as to accumulate more meet ranking points
that's why he put in pacers to drag them thru in 7'30 as he surmised there was enough talent in the field to crack 7'30
he put in considerable expense to pay guys to pace it thru in 5'00 & if he finds that the lead guy slows down after to a 7'40 finish & the win, he's not going to be happy - & that is the situation you were almost certainly going to have if the 2 choges weren't in the race
if that kid hadn't been there, choge wouda won in likely 7'28 flat which is still huge meet points & satisfactory return for promoter - the extra coupla tenths better makes little difference ( unless it meant a wr or not )
have a guess who the meet promoter woud most like to invite back next year :
- a guy who will virtually guarantee him a sub-7'30 clocking ?
- a guy who woud likely win a sub-7'30 race but will run nearer 7'40 if he has the option ??
