I don't think it necessarily covers the topic you are addressing- more like thrill of victory and agony of defeat, but my favorite running photo is of Rod Dixon at the finish of the 82 or 83 NY Marathon- arms and face raised to the rainy skies in celebration, while Geoff Smith lies utterly defeated, sprawled at the finish line, having been overcome by Dixon in the final stretch. There are several versions of the photo on the web, but the best was in an old history of the NY Marathon book.
Had never seen this, but looked it up after reading your post. Thanks!
Here's a 2-minute video of that race ('83). Great stuff.
I think the "picture" is around 1:49-1:52 in the video, for those interested.

Changed the world of middle distance running with that win -- the slowest quarter miler in the field ran 80-90 miles a week with a 5000m and marathoner as frequent training partners and became the Olympic champion at 800m. Forever changed middle distance running.

In all seriousness though, I would have a mosaic of tons of different pictures because there are too many good ones. My main reference would be the cool pics thread on dyestat.
Someone else already said this, but this would have to be it.
"Abebe Bikila running barefoot to Olympic gold in the marathon in Rome."
I also like the Dixon picture.
Another picture I like is that of a dejected Salazar after finishing fifth at the 1983 Fukuoka. It sums up how everyone feels after a race that did not go as planned.

Mr. Salazar doesn't look dejected at all! Just looks like he is putting his heels up and taking a rest.
No wonder it was so hard to find that picture. I stand corrected and am humbled by your superiority.

Whats with all the white people? Here are some great shots of the the best distance runners at work. AKA Africans!!! To me the most iconic is Geb and Tergat sprinting for the line in the 2000 olympic 10k. Maybe the best race of all time!
This used to be my screen saver back in the day. Awesome, awesome photo. Zapotek took it to eleven.
