As a not too fast runner, I think you did fine to go your own pace and come back to her later to wish her well. I have sometimes found it good speed work to push myself to stay with someone faster for a period of time, but if that person pulls ahead that's fine. I don't expect anyone to hold back for me, especially if I don't know the person and am just running with her/him for a short time (in fact, I probably in her place would have said something like, "I'm going to drop back now... but good running with you" or some such). If running with a friend (faster or slower), we will agree just to meet at the starting place at a particular time and each go our own pace.
If the woman didn't seem unhappy or slighted, I wouldn't worry about it. It doesn't sound at all like you were rude.

One time I was doing an easy run, when someone else made a what was for her a very hard move, and surged past me. Fine, I'm doing an easy run; I really don't care who passes me. And if it makes her day, great.
A bit later, she slowed drastically (was clearly tired) and I started approaching her again. She was looking back pretty regularly, and seemed a bit upset that I was approaching (still easy pace).
At this point, I'm on a bike trail, about 8 feet wide.
As I start to pass her on one side, she blocks me. Just veers across.
OK then, maybe she's just tired and veering back and forth.
So I try to pass on the other side, still staying at easy pace.
She blocks me again.
Repeat the cycle several more times -- she keeps trying to keep me from passing. I'm still at easy pace; she's clearly very tired.
I considered a snide comment, but finally decided not to say anything. I just threw in a stride, got past her, and dropped back down to easy pace and continued home.
The whole thing was pretty funny, though.
That's classic. There are some strange people out there.
This thread is useless without pics
Right... this would be what I'd call rude! ... also weird. But maybe she was hoping to get a date with the poster, so kept blocking his way in order to have a chance to ask? :)
