ACC school, late 90s, right after UCLA had a scandal for giving football players handicapped parking passes, I noticed us doing the exact same thing. Also, as a calculus TA, after grading final exams I was reading off the scores and watching the prof enter the exam scores and final grades. Upon reading one girls' name he muttered, "She's on the X-country team" and upped her from a D to B.
Most of these aren't that bad. I have heard of football players being busted for cheating or plagarism at a big 10 school and having it all swept under the rug...criminal offenses ignored...division 3 athletes submitting fake "medical redshirt" forms so they can run a 5th year...professors bumping athletes up from failing grades to passing ones...coaches teaching phoney classes so athletes could have full course loads and still be guarenteed As. And not to mention all the out-of-season all-day football practices that happen at pretty much every single school.

One day, during the indoor track season, after the semester was well underway, my coach came up to me and informed me I was getting a half scholarship (until this point I was a walk-on, but had become the 2nd best runner on the team), but not to ask any questions. I had already paid my school fees, but a couple of weeks later, I received a reimbursement check for what my scholarship had retroactively paid for.
I never asked any questions, but was always very curious how this happened, any ideas? This was a D1 program.
You mean Nike sending a team of attorneys to negotiate with UO and the NCAA to get a pro reinstated as an "am".

way back when, i was recruited to run at a Southern Cal 2-year school (Not NCAA, but good story anyway) coached by a famous past Olympic Champion. I was told i wouldn't be 'given' a job that i didn't have to go to and also wouldn't have to worry about classes, as the grades 'would take care of themself'. I decided it was too fishy for me, and about a year later the coach was busted for many similar illegal moves.
There is no reason to regard NCAA rules as anything more than an ego trip by the pettifogs and control freaks at headquarters. Imagine, trying to stop a visiting runner from running with the team, or worse, wow, being ogled by the coach, flagrante delicto, in courant motion in short pants, leaving carbon footprints galore and fumes of deadly CO2. Schools should be able to treat their athletes any way they like short of force and fraud under the laws of the land.
But all the NCAA rules are less perverse than the Title 9 assault on the facts of life: greater male testosterone and athletic interest. Title 9 is a real scandal, now being used by gender prigs as an tool to suppress male competitiveness and provoke resentment of football.
In contrast, none of the usual recruiting offenses are even culpable.

It's called a refund check, happens to a lot of people. I've gotten at least one per year for 5 years at my D1 school. I was only an athlete for four.
Question, i know galen was coached by Al Sal, but what did he do to circumnavigate the NCAA rules? I've heard some small things but nothing concrete or big enough like cars, or the like
knew a kid that had everything paid for at the college he was going to (room, board, tuition, books) and he was getting paid $500 per semester just to do whatever he wanted
That's not that unusual. I know a couple people on fully scholly's at big schools, and they get checks at the end of each semester as well. What happens is the athlete has a choice of meal plans, and if they don't choose the largest/most expensive one, they get the difference between that and the one they choose back in cash.

Not at my school, but a top-ranked runner female athlete who was on a sponsored "elite" team raced for a couple years as a "pro," then went back to grad school under the premise she was still eligible. Went on to be NCAA champ in the 10k a couple years ago.

Went to a D3 college and our AD used to take money made at sporting events and gamble at the casino with it. She finally got caught after doing it for 10 years.
