And everyone still starts in Reception and BCT. Generals had the same minimal entry standards as everyone else except that at some point in their career, either before or after enlisting, they needed a degree to get into OCS.
Entry levels into most colleges are pretty low as well should we make note of that as well? How about your typical high school? Pretty low standards.
We are talking about minimal entry standards....not the standard to excel. I don't think anyone ever said the ASVAB was hard...it's not meant to be difficult. It simply sets one of the standards of enlistment...meaning the military won't take just anyone off the street. In fact, the ASVAB isn't even the most important thing to consider. You could score a 99 (highest achievable score) on the ASVAB and still not get in if you have a record or certain medical issues. The ASVAB you can at least study for. Certain legal or medical issues will present a larger hurdle today. You could always get a waiver...but those of course take time and usually lots of it.
