This thread comes up a few times a year and it always takes about 30 posts or so before someone gives the right answer. When you combine "I Know It's Over" with the next track on the album, "Never Had No One Ever", it's about the most depressing 9 1/2 minutes of music imaginable.
Alone Again (Naturally) is a rough ride too.
Crap, I wish I'd never heard some of these downers.
Taps.
The majority of the songs written by The Smiths.

Great choice! I saw a rerun of Janis Ian singing this on SNL - very emotionally performed.
Reminds me of two similar songs:
All by Myself - Eric Carmen
Mr. Lonely - Bobby Vinton
Dust in the Wind
christmas shoes by new song
All by Myself - Eric Carmen
I thought of that one too, but I like Eric Carmen in general and don't consider him depressing. Go All The Way is a feel good song to me. So I didn't want to lump him in with Janis Ian, Terry Jacks or Gilbert O'Sullivan, whose singing alone (as well as the lyrics) I find hopeless, bleak and pathetic, respectively.
Besides, All By Myself tells the story of how the guy is paying for his prior mistakes at the moment but at least holds out the possibility he can turn it back around. Some of those other songs have the protagonist just totally giving up. Sheesh, Gilbert O'Sullivan is about to click the little "x" in the upper right-hand corner of his life. Then there's Seasons In The Sun - what can we say? Here today, gone tomorrow. It's like a funeral that's filled with wailing and questions and emptiness instead of a funeral that's a celebration of a life and an assurance the deceased is with his Maker.
I'd say Eleanor Rigby paints a pretty grim picture, too. But it's such a musical masterpiece that I could listen to it 10 times and actually be so appreciative of it that I'd feel happy.
Cat's In The Cradle sure does leave you knowing the situation will never be resolved during this guy's lifetime. Bummer.

To shake off this funk, I was thinking more along the lines of one of these:
Mr. Blue Sky
I'm Into Something Good
Walking On Sunshine
Hey Ya
Lookin' Out My Back Door
